The thermostat works with a PI control behavior and controls the actuator only for a certain time – depending on the tem-
perature difference between the setpoint value and the actual value – for a cycle of 15 minutes.
– With a high temperature difference, the switch-on times are each a maximum of about 13 minutes, in a 15-minute cy-
cle.
– With a low temperature difference, the switch-on time is a minimum of two minutes, in a 15-minute cycle. Minimum
temperature differences do not cause a triggering of the actuators.
The actuator won't be triggered for the remaining time until the 15-minute cycle has elapsed. For example, the actuator is
activated for eight minutes and switched off for seven minutes.
This control behavior counteracts the inertia inherent in the design of an floor heating system. If the room control unit were
to trigger the actuator continuously until a preset setpoint was reached, the room temperature would overshoot due to the
inertia of the system and the residual heat in the floor.
The control mode contains two control functions:
Main function
The main function is predominant and controls the heating zones to the room temperature according to the target value
previously set.
Auxiliary function (load compensation)
The auxiliary function distributes the load of the heating circuit distributor evenly and in an optimized way to all heating cir-
cuits used (load compensation). Thus, the load compensation allows a more continuous flow of the heating medium. Distri-
bution is performed at regular intervals in pulse width modulation (PWM) cycles per each individual heating zone per ther-
mostat.
In case of a change of the control parameters, the system performs a recalculation of the load compensation in each case.
The actuators connected to the respective heating zones regulate within one PWM cycle in respectively different timely in-
tervals.
The load compensation function is integrated in the Alpha Smartware Base station and cannot be deactivated.
3.2 Automatic adjustment
Due to its controller characteristics, the system ensures automatic flow rate adjustment in the connected circuits. A prerequi-
site for this is that the technical conditions (including flow temperature, pump pressure, pipe installation, valve settings) al-
low a correct heating of all rooms. In heating systems with strong deviations from these requirements, system-supporting
measures can be implemented:
Gradually increase the flow rate via the presettable valve / screwed return connection of the problematic area.
– If the valve to this room is already set to full flow, gradually throttle the valves of the other rooms.
– If the first two measures are not sufficient, increase the pump pressure at the heating circuit circulating pump.
– As a last measure, increase the flow temperature of the heating circuits.
3.3 Protection functions
The Alpha Smartware Base station has protective functions to prevent damage to the overall system.
Pump protection function
In order to avoid damage by longer standstill times, the pump is activated within pre-defined periods. When the pump pro-
tection function is active, the LED Pump lights up constantly in green. Display elements [} 30]
Valve protection function
During periods without valve activation (e. g. outside the heating period) all heating zones with logged-in room control unit
are activated in a cyclic way in order to avoid clogging of the valves.
