All users must read this operating manual and heed the information contained in it before using
the device.
Follow the general safety rules and regulations; e.g., wear protective clothing, eye protection,
and safety gloves.
Follow standard safe laboratory practices and procedures when working with infectious or haz-
ardous samples.
Do not operate the device in a potentially explosive atmosphere.
Only use the device for leak-testing pipettes that operate according to the air displacement prin-
ciple. Ensure that the device is not used for any of the excluded uses described in Operating ex-
clusions! When in doubt, contact the manufacturer or vendor.
Use only in a manner that poses no risk to the user or other people.
When testing air-displacement pipettes with mounted tips, employ only unused tips.
Never use force.
Only use original replacement parts. Do not make any modifications to the device.
Repairs and work inside the device should only be conducted by authorized electricians.
Always ensure that the device is in good condition before using it. If there are indications of a
problem with the device, interrupt the test immediately and follow the instructions in Trou-
bleshooting. If necessary, contact the manufacturer.
The AC adapter should be protected from moisture and may only be used with this device.
Improper handling of the device (short circuit, mechanical damage, overheating, wrong
AC adapter, etc.) can, in extreme cases, lead to fire or explosion of the device.
2.2 Function and operating limits
The BRAND leak testing unit is a differential pressure measuring device that determines leak rates in
air-displacement pipettes. Static and dynamic testing permit the localization of leaks. Dynamic test-
ing is preferable.
Testing is possible both with tips (for testing the instrument/tip interface and the entire system) and
without tips (for testing the instrument).
The leak rate is directly related to the volume loss in the pipette.
The leak rate Q
is a measure of the amount of substance (mass) flowing through a leak per unit of
L
time.
The leak rate is the ratio of the pV value of a gas to the period of time during which the gas flows
through the leak. The pV value is the product of the pressure and the volume of a specific amount of a
gas at a given temperature. For an ideal gas, the pV value at a given temperature is a measure of the
amount of substance or the mass of the gas. The leak rate is dependent on the type of gas, the abso-
lute pressure, the pressure difference, and the temperature.
In the pipette tests, suitable units for the leak rate Q
pressure of 1000 hPa corresponds to a volume loss of 1 μL/s.
