Chapter 6: Troubleshooting
This Chapter considers situations that may arise and suggests possible causes and recommended actions.
Situation
Generator does not power
up when switched on
Fully charged battery does
not support generator opera-
tion for expected duration.
Battery not charging
Battery recharger indicators
(x3) not illuminated
Battery recharging lights fail
to illuminate orange when bat-
tery still discharged
Battery recharging light(s) con-
tinuously illuminated orange
after 12 hours of recharging
Battery recharging light(s)
continuously illuminated red
Electrosurgical generator
does not recognise patient
return electrode when using
patient return adaptor OR
No smoke clearing and elec-
trosurgical instrument not
working
Possible cause(s)
No battery power remaining
Faulty generator or mains converter
Incorrect power supply being used
with the mains converter.
Battery at end of life through use
or damage.
Power cable not supplying power
to recharging station
Battery not inserted correctly
Battery exhausted
No connection to wall adaptor
Wall adaptor not connected to
an acceptable mains voltage
supply
Battery recharger or wall adap-
tor damaged
Battery not properly seated
in battery recharger cradle
Battery recharger damaged
Battery damaged and continu-
ously dissipating charging energy
Battery recharger or wall adap-
tor damaged
Interference from other EMC
sources
Incorrect patient return adaptor
Defective patient return electrode
Defective patient return adaptor
Recommended action
Replace with fully charged battery
Contact manufacturer or local distributor
Replace power supply with correct power
supply.
Replace with new battery
Confirm battery recharger power indica-
tor is green.
Confirm that battery is inserted correctly
with the terminals in contact with the ter-
minals on the battery recharging station.
Purchase replacement battery.
Check connection
Check mains supply acceptable
Contact manufacturer or local distributor
Reposition battery until recharging
light changes to orange
Contact manufacturer or local distributor
Replace with new battery
Replace with new recharger
Switch Battery Recharger mains supply
off. Ensure leads are not in contact or
wrapped around those of another system.
Reapply mains supply to the Battery
recharger.
Ensure chosen solid or split adaptor
matches the patient return electrode being
used in the procedure.
Connect return electrode directly to
electrosurgical generator – if the return
electrode is recognised it is NOT
defective.
Perform previous two actions. If these do
not resolve the issue, replace the patient
return adaptor.
