9. TESTING THE CHAIN BRAKE
Before cutting with the chain saw, test the chain brake as follows:
A. Make sure that the chain brake is disengaged.
B. Place the chain saw on a firm, flat, dry surface free of debris. Do not allow the chain saw to come into
contact with any objects.
C. Plug the unit into the power source.
D. Grasp the front handle (not the chain brake lever/hand guard) with your left hand. The thumb and
fingers should encircle the handle.
E. Grasp the rear handle with your right hand. The thumb and fingers must encircle the handle.
F. Press the LOCK/OFF button with the right thumb. Squeeze the trigger with your index finger.
G. With the engine running, activate the chain brake by moving your left hand forward against the lever.
H. The chain and engine should stop abruptly.
WARNING
If the chain and motor do not stop when the chain brake is applied, take the chain saw to the nearest
professional mechanic. Do not operate the chain saw if the chain brake is not working properly.
10. GENERAL CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS
10.1. FELLING A TREE
Felling is the action of cutting down a tree. Small trees up to 15-18 cm in diameter are usually felled in one
cut. Larger trees require notched cuts. The notches determine the direction in which the tree will fall.
WARNING
A retreat path should be planned and cleared before felling commences. The retreat path must
extend back and diagonally to the rear of the expected fall line.
WARNING
If felling a tree on sloping ground, the chainsaw operator should stay on the uphill side of the
ground, as the tree is likely to roll or slide downhill after felling.
