While the chain saw is cutting, make sure that the chain and guide bar are properly lubricated.
11. BAR / CHAIN MAINTENANCE
GUIDE BAR MAINTENANCE
Make sure that the power cord is disconnected before performing any maintenance on your chainsaw.
Proper maintenance of the guide bar, as explained in this section, is essential to keep your chainsaw in
good working order.
PINION TIP LUBRICATION
Failure to lubricate the guide bar sprocket tip as explained
below will result in malfunction and seizure, voiding the
manufacturer's warranty.
It is recommended that the sprocket tip be lubricated after
each use of the saw. Always clean the pinion end of the guide
bar thoroughly before lubrication.
TO LUBRICATE THE PINION TIP
Wear heavy-duty work gloves when performing this application to reduce the risk of personal injury.
1. Unplug the chain saw from the power source.
Note: It is not necessary to remove the chain from the saw to lubricate the guide bar sprocket tip. Lubrication
can be done on the job.
2. Clean the guide bar sprocket tip.
3. Using a lubrication gun, insert the needle tip into the lubrication hole and inject grease until it appears
on the outer edge of the sprocket tip.
4. Ensure that the chain brake is disengaged. Rotate the chainsaw chain by hand. Repeat the lubrication
procedure until the entire sprocket tip is greased.
GUIDE BAR MAINTENANCE
Most guide bar problems can be avoided by simply maintaining the saw properly. Incorrect filing and
uneven blade and depth gauge settings are the cause of most guide bar problems. As the guide bar wears
unevenly, the rails widen, which can lead to chain rattle and difficulty in making straight cuts.
Insufficient lubrication of the guide bar and using the saw with a chain that is too tight will contribute to
rapid wear of the guide bar.
To help minimise guide bar wear, the following maintenance is recommended:
The guide bar should be reversed every 8 working hours to ensure even wear.
Keep the bar groove and lubrication hole clean by using a specific bar groove cleaner.
Frequently check the bar rails for wear and, if necessary, remove the cutters and square the rails using the
flat file.
