Note: The direction of fall is controlled by the notch cut. Before making any cuts, consider the location of
the largest branches and the natural slope of the tree to determine the direction of fall of the tree.
WARNING
Do not cut a tree when strong or shifting winds are blowing or if there is a health hazard. Consult
a professional. Do not cut down a tree if there is a danger of hitting utility wires; notify the utility
company before making any cuts.
10.2. GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR TREE FELLING
Normally, felling consists of 2 main cutting operations, notching and making the felling cut. Start by making
the top notch on the side of the tree facing the felling direction.
Make sure not to make the bottom cut too deep into the trunk.
The notch should be deep enough to create a hinge of sufficient width and strength.
The notch must be wide enough to direct the fall of the tree for as long as possible.
WARNING
Never drive past a tree that has been notched. Make the felling cut from the other side of the tree
and 3 to 5 cm above the edge of the notch.
Never cut completely through the trunk, always leave a hinge. The hinge guides the tree, if you cut the
entire trunk, you lose control over the felling direction.
FELLING CUTTING:
1. Use wooden or plastic wedges to prevent the bar or chain from jamming in the cut. The wedges also
control the felling.
2. When the diameter of the wood to be cut is larger than the length of the bar, make 2 or more cuts as
required.
WARNING
As the felling cut approaches the hinge, the tree should begin to fall. When the tree begins to fall,
remove the saw from the cut, unplug it, lower the chain saw and leave the area along the retreat
path.
