LIMBING A TREE
Tree limbing is the process of removing branches from a fallen tree. Do not remove the supporting limbs
until after the trunk has been cut into pieces. Limbs under tension should be cut from the bottom up to
avoid jamming the chain saw.
WARNING
Never cut branches from a tree while standing on the trunk.
CUTTING A TRUNK
Make sure you have a good base of support and stand on top of the trunk when cutting on sloping ground.
If possible, the log should be supported so that the end to be cut is not resting on the ground. If the log
is supported at both ends and you must cut through the middle, make a downward cut in the middle of
the log and then make the cut underneath. This will prevent the log from pinching the bar and chain. Be
careful that the chain does not penetrate the ground when cutting the log, as this causes rapid dulling of
the chain.
When cutting a log on a slope, always position yourself on the uphill side.
1. Trunk supported over its entire length: Cut from the top, taking care not to cut into the ground if used
in an indoor area.
2. Log supported at one end: First, cut from below 1/3 of the diameter of the log to avoid splintering.
Second, cut from above, to meet the first cut and avoid pinching.
3. Log supported at both ends: first, cut 1/3 of the diameter of the log to prevent splintering. Second,
make upward cuts from the underside of a suspended log to meet the first cut and avoid pinching.
4. When limbing on a slope, always stand on the uphill side of the log.
5. When "cutting across", to maintain full control, release cutting pressure near the end of the cut without
loosening your grip on the chain saw handles.
Do not let the chain touch the ground. After the cut is completed, wait for the chain to stop before moving
the saw. Always stop the engine before moving from one tree to another.
Note: The best way to support a log during cutting is to use a saw stand. When this is not possible, lift
the log and support it with branch stumps or support logs. Make sure that the log you are cutting is well
supported.
CUTTING WITH TRESTLE
For reasons of personal safety and to facilitate cutting, it is essential to adopt the correct position for vertical
cutting.
VERTICAL CUT
A. Hold the chainsaw firmly with both hands and keep it to the right of your body while cutting.
B. Keep your left arm as straight as possible.
C. Keep your weight on both feet.
