• Now turn the tensioner roller anti-clockwise,
using Double-Pin Wrench 2587-1, towards
position (3) until the Locking Plate 2588-2
can be easily removed.
• Restrain movement of Double-Pin Wrench
2587-1 to maintain this position whilst pla-
cing Setting Tool 2588-9 in position (A).

Setting Tool 2588-9
• Select the appropriate pin size of Setting
Tool 2588-9 and use it to "set" the gap on
the timing belt tensioner at position (A) as
follows:
➪ Pin diameter 7 mm:
ANY and AYZ engines
➪ Pin diameter 4 mm:

Using Double-Pin Wrench 2587-1, turn ten-
sioner roller anti-clockwise until Locking
Pin 2588-8 can be inserted. Then turn
clockwise until a limit stop is reached.
Tighten roller nut and remove old belt. Fit
new belt, ensuring that camshaft sprocket is
in position within elongated slots.

Engines
➪ For model usage / engine codes
refer to Application Chart, pages 6 - 11
• 2.0l TDi Pumpe Düse (Unit Injection) diesel
engines are twin cam engines with a mecha-
nical belt tensioner. They require the same
Crankshaft Fixing Device 2588-1 as descri-
bed above, but use a different Double-Pin
Wrench 2587-2 and 2 x Camshaft Locking
Pins 2588-3.
experienced mechanics. Always wear personal protective equipment.

• Check that the crankshaft shows on the
"marking" and that it is fixed. Ensure the
timing marks on the camshaft sprockets are
visible. Slacken the 3 x bolts on each of the
timing belt sprockets in order to allow them
to move within the elongated slots. Insert
the 2 x Locking Pins 2588-3 through the free
outer elongated slots and into the holes in
the cylinder head to lock the camshaft.

CAUTION:
Belt tension adjustment must only be
carried out when the engine is cold.
Tensioner Tools – Locking Pin 2588-8 and
Double-Pin Wrench 2587-2
• The application is the same as the tensioner
in 1.9 TDi Pumpe Düse (unit injection)
engines when releasing tension and fitting
Locking Pin 2588-8.
• When fitting a new timing belt, please pro-
ceed as described above.
CAUTION:
Insert Double-Pin Wrench 2587-2 into
the tensioner roller's holes and align
pointer with notch. When tightening
the nut, the pointer will move 5 mm to
the right. Do not adjust as this will correct
during running.
