Service Notes

A routine equipment inspection of the MAYFIELD Infinity XR2 Skull Clamp should be made well before
each case and every procedure to assist in keeping the instrument in good functional condition and to
avoid problems the day of surgery. This check should include the following:
Visually confirm that there are no Skull Pins in the rocker arm or Torque Screw
before removing the rocker attachment. It is safest to completely remove the ratchet
extension from the clamp before removing Skull Pins or changing rocker arms.
1. Check to see that all the components of the Skull Clamp are available and assembled for use.
The Skull Clamp should have the body portion of the clamp, the ratchet extension arm, the
Torque Screw and the rocker arm. All components should be assembled together and ready for
use.
2. Plunger and ratchet extension function - Pull the plunger on the body portion of the Skull
Clamp allowing the ratchet extension to be pulled out.
- The plunger should easily disengage the ratchet teeth. Letting loose of the plunger, it should
spring back to its original position.
- Slip the ratchet extension back into the body portion and push the extension to close
the components together. They should move smoothly and evenly with little effort. If the
components do not move smoothly or not at all, the Skull Clamp should be returned for
maintenance.
3. Rocker Arm - Remove the Rocker Arm from the swivel base. It should slide in and out easily. Re-
insert the Rocker Arm into the swivel base.
- Holding the Rocker Arm in one hand, lock and unlock the Swivel Lock Knob back and forth. It
should freely turn about a quarter turn between the unlocked lock symbol and the locked lock
symbol.
- With the Swivel Knob in the locked position, the Rocker Arm should not rotate. There
should be no more than 1-1.5 mm of movement in any position of the Rocker Arm. Try at least
4 different positions. If the Rocker Arm has excessive movement, it should not be used and
the Skull Clamp should be returned for maintenance. Note: When testing for Rocker Arm
movement, force should be exerted on the Rocker Arm to keep it from turning itself out.
4. Torque Screw - The head of the Torque Screw Shaft should be seated against the surface of the
knob when no force is applied.
- Remove the Ratchet Extension from the body portion of the Skull Clamp. Push the Skull Pin
Socket end of the Torque Screw against a hard counter surface to push the force plunger out
from the surface of the knob. Releasing the pressure, the head of the Torque Screw should once
again be against the surface of the knob.
IMPORTANT NOTE: To obtain the best performance from the Swivel Lock Knob mechanism,
store the clamp with the Swivel Lock Knob in the UNLOCKED position.
