2. Verifying the opening pressure
The proGAV Verfi cation Tool is positioned cen-
trally on the valve. The marking on the instru-
ment has to point towards the proximal cathe-
ter (leading to the ventricle). The arrow on the
bottom side of the proGAV Verfi cation Tool in-
dicates the direction of CSF-fl ow. The button is
pushed and the pressure setting is read (fi g. 13).

Caution: Placing the proGAV Verfi cation Tool
in a non-central position on the valve can
lead to erroneous readings!
3. Adjusting the opening pressure
3a. Adjustment with the proGAV Adjustment Tool.
The proGAV Adjustment Tool is set to the re-
quired opening pressure by turning the knurled
dial of the unit (fi g. 14a).

Caution: The new opening pressure set-
ting of the valve must not differ from the
measured opening pressure by more than 8
cmH O in any one setting (see Nr.4).

The proGAV Adjustment Tool is positioned

strument has to point towards the proximal ca-
theter (leading to the ventricle). As soon as the
proGAV Adjustment Tool has been positioned
centrally on the valve, the button is pushed onto
the valve and the adjustment tip appears. This
triggers the mechanical decoupling and the val-
ve setting is adjusted to the required opening
pressure setting (fi g. 14b).

Caution: Ensure that the instrument remains
close to the valve during the adjustment
procedure. When treating patients who have
a low tolerance to pain, local anaesthesia
(e.g. applied through a plaster) should be
considered,in cases where contraindication
can be excluded.
If the site of implantation is poorly selected
or if the skin over the valve is too thick, an
adjustment of the proGAV can be diffi cult or
sometimes impossible.
The adjustable DP-unit then behaves like a
valve with one opening pressure. Patients
should discuss the risks involved with their
surgeon.
When adjusting the proGAV preoperatively
through the packaging, moderate force with
the proGAV Adjustment Tool is suffi cient. DO
NOT USE THE BUTTON! Strong pressure
can cause damage to the housing, which
might affect valve function.
