NOTE: A standard good quality DTI will suffi ce for this application as the DTI is not being used for measurement. It is only to indicate that the piston has
achieved TDC position (DTI needle achieves its highest reading and starts to move in the reverse direction).
Remove the spark plugs and install the DTI into DT.4519 and secure with the Thumbscrew.
Screw DT.4519 fully into the spark plug hole of No1 cylinder. Turn the crankshaft, in the normal direction of engine rotation, so that the piston reacts on the
indicator pin of DT.4519 and in turn, moves the needle of the DTI.
TDC is achieved when the needle reaches its highest reading and starts to move in the reverse direction. NOTE: The piston must be on its ignition stroke.
Check that timing marks on pulley and belt cover align.

DT.4543 Crankshaft Locking Tool
- Refer to Application Chart for details of models/engines using DT.4543
On some 1.8 16v. engines DT4543 Crankshaft Locking Tool is fi tted to establish the crankshaft at TDC and 'lock' it in position. To fi t DT.4543 remove the oil
pump bolt and replace it with the Support Spindle of DT.4543, then attach the Main Body of DT.4543.
Turn the crankshaft slowly to locate the dowel on the crankshaft gear into the hole in the Main Body of DT.4543. Secure the Main Body in place with its bolt
through to the crankshaft gear.
NOTE: DT.4543 will have to be temporarily removed and refi tted when fi tting a new belt on the crankshaft gear.
4
DT.4528 Flywheel Holding Tool (Crankshaft Locking)
DT.4528 is used to 'lock' the fl ywheel to retain the crankshaft at TDC when using DT.4519, and as a counter-holding device to release/tighten the crankshaft
pulley bolt when removing and installing this pulley (crankshaft pulley must be removed in order to remove the timing belt).

DT.4526 Camshaft Setting Plate Set (RED)
DT.4527 Camshaft Setting Plate Set (BLUE)
DT.4546 Camshaft Setting Plate Set (ORANGE)
- Refer to Application Chart for details of models/engines. There are a number of variants of the 1.8 16v engine. It is essential that the
correct Camshaft Setting Plate Set is used – ENGINE DAMAGE WILL RESULT IF INCORRECT PLATES ARE USED.
Cam Setting Plates are bolted in position in place of designated bearing caps on both the inlet and exhaust camshafts. Each Setting Plate is machined to provide
the exact profi le and 'timed' position of the camshaft lobe at the designated bearing location.
Refer to the Application Chart to select the appropriate Setting Plate Set for the 1.8 16v engine code being worked on.
Attach Plate marked "Inlet" to the inlet camshaft in place of the bearing cap of cylinder No. 2.
Attach Plate marked "Exh" to the exhaust camshaft in place of the bearing cap of cylinder No. 3.
When removing the camshaft bearing caps, clearly mark which is the inlet and exhaust and keep clean at all times. When installing Cam Setting Plates use
DT.4518 Retaining Bolts. When subsequently re-fi tting bearing caps, using original bolts, tighten to specifi ed torque (15Nm).
Once crankshaft and camshaft timing positions are 'locked', the old belt is removed and both camshaft sprockets are released and free to turn on camshafts.
When fi tting new belt the marks on the belt are aligned with marks on the sprockets/pulleys.
WARNING: DO NOT use Camshaft Setting Plates to hold camshafts in position whilst releasing or tightening the sprocket bolts. Use a
suitable Sprocket Holding Tool – DT.CLE.
6
DT.4529 Tensioner Adjuster
When the new belt is fi tted, this Tensioner Adjuster is inserted through an opening in the tensioner bracket and is turned to initially adjust to the tensioner to
maximum tension position.
7
After tightening the camshaft sprocket bolts, remove all tools and rotate engine twice, by hand, returning to TDC position. Ensure timing marks align at TDC,
adjust tensioner to fi nal position using DT.4529 so that the pointer aligns with the reference on the crankcase – see diagram 7.
Section 2:
PETROL ENGINES – 2.0 20v & 2.0 20v. Turbo. engines
- Refer to Application Chart for details of models/engines
FIAT 2.0 20v. engines require the following timing tools from DT. FIAT-P2
DT.4519 Crankshaft TDC Positioning Tool
DT.4530 Camshaft Setting Plate Set (Black)
DT.4531 Camshaft Setting Plate Set (Purple)
