10 - Preliminary safety requirements for the intended use

10.1 - Recommended personal protective equipment

Personal protective equipment must be used during unit operation and maintenance. The personal protective
equipment is indicated by an obligation sign (see paragraph 1.3.3).

10.2 - Plates and labels on the unit

The user must make sure that the labels and plates applied by the manufacturer on the unit are
kept in good condition, legible and attached properly. If worn, illegible or in any case not fully
understandable, the labels and plates must be replaced.

10.3 - Emergency conditions

Ammonia is a potentially explosive substance, with a fire risk, toxic and irritating and can cause irreparable damage
or even death.

10.3.1 - Safety measures and steps to be taken in the event of coolant leakage

In the event the user detects:
- leakage of ammonia vapour or liquid ammonia from the unit or from its connections or
- sudden and strong smells or irritation of the airways and eyes or even
- the activation of an alarm device and/or signal that detects the concentration of ammonia

Leave the room and activate the emergency device
The fault must be corrected by experienced and trained personnel; prior to entry into the room, the operator must:
- wear protective equipment for the airways and for the eyes, gloves and protective clothing suitable for the
circumstances,
- wait for the complete evacuation of the accumulation of ammonia present in the room or area where the
damaged unit is installed,
- seek assistance from personnel ready to intervene if needed.

10.3.2 - Instructions for treating injuries

The injuries resulting from contact with ammonia can cause:
- freezing;
- corrosive wounds on the skin.
The personnel support must immediately:
- contact a doctor;
- provide airway protection;
- lead the injured person to the shower and wash him with warm water (the injured person must be put under
the shower with clothes on).
