4 Checking the specific gravity
Determine the specific gravity of each sepa-
rate cell using a commercial hydrometer.
This specific gravity gives an indication of the
state of charge (see Table).
The specific gravity in all cells should be
at least 1.200 kg/l, while the difference
between the highest and lowest readings
should be less than 0.050 kg/l.
If this is not the case, then charge the bat-
tery, or replace it.

During this check, the temperature of the bat-
tery liquid should preferably be 20 degrees C.
Measuring the specific gravity shortly after
water has been added results in an incorrect
measurement. First charge the battery to mix
the added water thoroughly.

It is only necessary to check the electrolyte
level and the specific gravity of acid on con-
ventional semi-traction or traction batteries.
These tasks are not necessary on Vetus'
AGM or Gel batteries.
