FORMING THE RIGID STRUT
1. Hold the back brace against the patient's back so that the lower edge of the brace is level with the coccyx
(Figure 5). The upper edge should reach to approximately 3–5 cm below C7. The aluminum strut contained
inside the brace is cold-formable and can be shaped without a tool. Start by shaping at the lordosis and then
work upwards (Figure 6).

APPLYING THE BRACE

1. Place axillary straps over the shoulder (Figure 7).
2. Close belt arms by attaching the front closure hook and loop (Figure 8). Note that the bottom edge of the belt
arm should ideally be positioned below the greater trochanter, covering the ASIS
3. Tighten the pulley system using the compression system handles, which should be pulled outward, then over,
attaching finally to the oval area in the front of the brace (Figure 9).
4. Move the axillary strap handles from the external to the internal button hooks (Figure 10).
5. Adjust axillary straps:
a. Tighten the straps by first detaching the alligator clips (Figure11).
b. Pull straps downwards until a snug fit is achieved. The straps should not be too tight, digging into the skin or
axilla. A finger width gap should be left.
c. Trim excess strap on both sides with scissors if necessary, then replace alligator clip on strap
(Figure 12). Make sure the strap is not trimmed to close to the upper D-ring of the axillary strap.
d. The alligator clip can be tucked into the padding in order to prevent unwanted patient manipulation
(Figure 13).
6. Check the fit of the brace
• The back portion should fit the patient's spinal curvature
• The belt arms run firmly below the pelvic bone
• The axillary straps are flat against the body
• Compression system handles for lower back support are placed in the front oval area
• Axillary strap handles are clipped on the internal button hooks
Figure 14 depicts a correctly fitted brace.
REMOVING THE BRACE
1. Clip the axillary strap handles back to the external button hooks (Figure 15).
2. Detach compression system handles slowly from the belt to loosen, and attach them at the original position –
on the side of the belt arms (Figure 16).
3. Detach the overlapping front closure.
4. Remove axillary straps from shoulders.
NOTE: To ensure a proper fit, be sure the compression system is stretched to its full width before re-applying the
