Simulator for ultrasound guided
sclerotherapy for varicose veins
Ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy for varicose veins is gaining in importance. In order to achieve the
optimum result, it is essential that the person carrying out the procedure be suitably qualified. Professional
expertise and experience, as well as good hand-eye coordination, are needed to be able to insert the need-
le accurately into the desired vein. The simulator is a reproduction of the right upper thigh. Its features are:
• It has the natural feel of real soft tissue, ideal for carrying out palpations and injections.
• It is possible to inject real medication
• It features a texture and echogenicity similar to those of real tissue, on realistic ultrasound images
• The simulator is developed and manufactured in Germany
1 The 1012792 simulator comprises
A skin-colored right thigh
The following are also delivered
• White tray and cover
• White liquid receptacle
• Stand with plastic bottle and infusion set
• Syringe (5 ml) with cannula (green, 21Gx2)
2 Assembly
In order to have access to a vein carrying blood, the liquid supply is to be set up as follows:
• Place the stand on a flat surface
• Fix the knurled screw to hang up the liquid bottle on the upper edge of the stand (marked in red)
• Put 250 ml of water into the plastic bottle and add the red dye until the desired color is achieved for the
artificial blood
• Close the bottle with the gray rubber bung, and shake the liquid to produce an even color
• Pull the suspension net over the infusion bottle, and hang it on the hook on the stand
• Pick up the infusion set (4000161) and close the flow regulator
• Insert the spike of the drip chamber right into the gray rubber bung
• Fill it up with liquid from the bottle by pressing on the drip chamber several times, then open the air
valve in front of the spike
• Remove the stopper on the end of the infusion cable and attach it to the distal end of the of the vessel
• Guide the proximal end of the vessel magna into the white receptacle
• Remove any air from the tubes until the artificial blood (red liquid in the plastic bottle) enters the recep
tacle by opening the flow regulator in the infusion tube
• Close the infusion system once more with the flow regulator
• During the simulation, the flow regulator may be opened for a short time, if necessary, so that the liquid
removed may flow
• You can now start the simulation of ultrasound guided sclerotherapy (see chapter 3.4)
3 Carrying out ultrasound guided sclerotherapy
3.1 Instructions
Vein atrophy (sclerotherapy) is a treatment method whereby varicose veins are „turned off" by injecting a
sclerosing agent, into the vena saphena magna for example. Sclerosing agents lead to a marked modifi-
cation of the vascular wall. After that, the connective tissue of the veins is modified, and finally becomes
atrophied.
