CHAPTER 1 - INTRODUCTION

1.1. General

The ELTRAC 471 is a microcomputer controlled unit
for continuous and intermittent traction. The equip-
ment is only meant to be used by competent per-
sonnel in physiotherapy, rehabilitation or adjacent
areas.
The newly designed control panel has integrated
push buttons for selecting such parameters as trac-
tion force, hold time and treatment time. The se-
lected parameters are set by rotating a single con-
trol knob. All parameters can be set before or after
the start of treatment; the microcomputer maintains
the correct treatment sequence. Parameters can also
be changed during treatment making it possible, for
example. to change from continuous to intermittent
traction.
The cord used to apply the traction can be easily
adjusted to the required length. A special tensioning
system ensures that a minimum tension of 15 N (1.5
kg) is always applied to the cord. This enables the
cord to be paid out easily, and ensures that it rolls
up automatically when released.
Operation is, in all respects, versatile and simple.

1.2. Finally

You have made a wise choice in selecting the ELTRAC
471. We are confident that your unit will continue to
give satisfaction over many years of use. Neverthe-
less, if you have any queries or suggestions, please
contact your authorised distributor.

2.1.
It is important that you read these operating instruc-
tions carefully before using the ELTRAC 471. Please
make sure that these instructions are available to all
personnel who operates the equipment.
Pay attention to the following before using the
ELTRAC 471:
1. Keep yourself informed of the contra-indications
(see chapter 3).
2. The apparatus may not be used in close proximity
(i.e. less than 2 metres) to shortwave equipment.
3. Never leave the patient unattended during treatment.
4. The apparatus may not be used in so-called "wet
rooms" (hydrotherapy rooms).
The manufacturer cannot be held responsible for the
results of using this apparatus for any purposes other
than described in these operating instructions.
2.2. General
In the ELTRAC 471 the traction force is controlled
and monitored by the built-in microprocessor. The
tension in the cord is measured electronically, and
compared with the set value. If these values differ,
the motor equalizes the difference. In this way, the
patient's movements are taken into account, and the
tension in the cord remains constant.
A further advantage of the electronic traction control
is that the speed of applying and releasing the trac-
tion force can be adjusted. In addition to the elec-
tronic safety system, the unit is also provided with a
mechanical traction limiting system, and a patient
stop switch which enables the patient to terminate
the treatment.
All functions of the unit are controlled and monitored
by the built-in microcomputer, ensuring a high de-
gree of reliability and safety.

2.3. Product liability

A law on Product Liability has become effective in
many countries. This Product Liability law implies,
amongst other things, that once a period of 7 years
has elapsed after a product has been brought into
circulation, the manufacturer can no longer be held
responsible for possible shortages of the product.
