GASTRO-ENTERIC FEEDING TUBE
WITH ENFit
Patient Care Instructions
G
The MIC* Gastro-Enteric (GE) Feeding Tube is a single unit feeding and drainage
device. It enters the stomach through a gastric stoma. A balloon inside the
stomach holds the tube in place on the inside and the external retention ring
holds the tube in place on the outside. The side access port is labeled Jejunal
and is used to deliver nutrients to the small intestine. The center access port is
labeled Gastric and is used to drain the stomach. Both access ports contain ENFit
connectors that fit with ENFit
feeding sets and syringes. A third port labeled Bal.
®
is used to inflate and deflate the balloon.

Tube Flushing
Flush the feeding tube with water every 4–6 hours during continuous feeding,
anytime the feeding is interrupted, at least every 8 hours if the tube is not being
used, or per clinician's instructions. Flush the feeding tube after checking gastric
residuals. Flush the feeding tube before, after, and in between medication
administration. Avoid using other liquids such as cranberry juice and cola
beverages to flush feeding tubes.
• Use a 30 to 60 ml ENFit
syringe. Do not use smaller size syringes as this can
®
increase pressure on the tube and potentially rupture smaller tubes.
• Use room temperature water for tube flushing.
• Always flush the tube with the amount of water prescribed by the clinician.
• Do not use excessive force to flush the tube. Excessive force can perforate the
tube and may cause injury.
Jejunal Feeding
Warning: Never connect the Jejunal access port to suction. Do not
measure residuals from the Jejunal access port. Never attempt to bolus
feed through the jejunal lumen.
1. Assemble the equipment: Formula; Feeding set; ENFit® syringe; Enteral
feeding pump; Water for flushing the tube.
2. Wash your hands with soap and water. Rinse and dry them thoroughly.
3. Before starting the feeding, it is important to verify that your tube is in the
correct position. Look at the centimeter numbers on the tube. Compare them
to the numbers recorded in the information section. If they are different,
adjust the tube and the ring. Refer to the tube care section for more detail.
4. Shake the formula and wipe the container tops before opening. If you do not
use all the formula, cover the open container, record the date and time, and
store it in the refrigerator. Throw away formula more than 24 hours old. Do
not mix new formula with old formula. There is always a chance it will spoil.

5. Pour the formula into the feeding bag.
6. Run formula through the feed set tubing to reduce the amount of air
entering the stomach. Attach the tubing to the enteral feeding pump. Follow
the manufacturer's directions to set the pump.
7. Open the cap to the Jejunal access port of the MIC* GE feeding tube.
®
8. Use an ENFit
syringe to flush the tube through the Jejunal access port with
®
the prescribed amount of water (see the Tube Flushing section above).
9. Securely connect the ENFit® feed set connector from the feed set to the
Jejunal access port of the MIC* GE feeding tube. Take care not to over-tighten
the feed set connector to the access port.
10. If the feed set tubing has a clamp, open it.
11. Start the feeding pump.
12. Disconnect the ENFit
®
13. Use an ENFit
syringe to flush the tube through the Jejunal access port with
®
the prescribed amount of water (see the Tube Flushing section above).
14. Close the cap to the Jejunal access port of the MIC* GE feeding tube.
Note: If you see formula in the gastric drainage, stop the feeding and
notify the specialist.
Medication Administration
Use liquid medication when possible and consult the pharmacist to determine
if it is safe to crush solid medication and mix with water. If safe, pulverize the
solid medication into a fine powder form and dissolve the powder in warm
water before administering through the feeding tube. Never crush enteric coated
medication or mix medication with formula.
1. Assemble the equipment: Medication; ENFit
tube.
2. Wash your hands with soap and water. Rinse and dry them thoroughly.
3. Before administering medication, it is important to verify that your tube is in
the correct position. Look at the centimeter numbers on the tube. Compare
them to the numbers recorded in the information section. If they are
different, adjust the tube and the ring. Refer to the tube care section for more
detail.
4. Prepare the medication as prescribed by the pharmacist.
5. Fill an ENFit
syringe with the proper amount of medication.
®
6. Open the cap to the prescribed access port of the MIC* GE tube.
7. Use an ENFit
®
syringe to flush the tube with the prescribed amount of water
(see the Tube Flushing section above).
8. Securely connect the ENFit
port. Take care not to over-tighten the syringe to the access port.
9. Deliver the medication by depressing the ENFit® syringe plunger.
10. Remove the syringe from the access port.
11. Use an ENFit
®
syringe to flush the tube with the prescribed amount of water
as described in the General Flushing Guidelines.
