SHIFT CONTROL INSPECTION/
ADJUSTMENT
1) Check the following by moving the control lever
(remote control type) or shift lever (tiller handle
type) to the "F" (Forward), "N" (Neutral) and the
"R" (Reverse) position.
• The outboard motor is in gear when the shift
lever is in the "F" (Forward) or "R" (Reverse)
position.
• The outboard motor is out of gear when the
shift lever is in the "N" (Neutral) position.
• The click roller is in the "F", "N" or "R" position
of the shift link B when the shift lever or control
lever is in the "F" (Forward), "N" (Neutral) or "R"
(Reverse) position respectively.

2) If not, remove the shift control cable from the shift
arm.
3) Loosen the lock nut, and disconnect the shift rod
A and B by turning the joint nut.
4) Move the shift arm to the "R" (Reverse) position,
and check that the click roller is in the "R"
(Reverse) position of the shift link B.

5) Push down the shift rod B to the lowermost
position. (The outboard motor should be in the
reverse gear this time.)
6) Screw in the joint nut up to the end of the shift rod
A.
7) Adjust the lock nut position so that the end of the
shift rod B is 8 mm or more out of the end of the
lock nut.
Holding the lock nut in this position, tighten the
shift rod joint nut against the shift rod B until the
shift rod joint nut comes in contact with the lock
nut.

8) Hold the joint nut and tighten the lock nut
securely.
9) Connect the shift control cable (see page 22 or
36).

Screw in up to the end
of the shift rod A.
