The functions "rapid wind" »» and "rapid rewind" <4 serve to
rewind the tape and to locate specific positions on the tape.
During playback, pushbuttons 7 and 8 may be depressed
directly vet, in the case of recording, the stop button 4 must
be depressed beforehand.
Auto shut-off
This unit features an electronic tape transport monitor system
which effects immediate automatic shut-off at tape end or in
case of malfunctions regardless of cassette or switching foil used
How to make your own recordings
In addition to the preceding notes regarding playback of pre-
recorded cassettes, the following details must be borne in mind
when making cassette tape recordings:
* Select the tape-type (see "Tape-type selection' on page 8)
* Depress the Dolby NR button 18 .
* Set the tape counter 11 to "000" by depressing the reset
button 12
Recording preparation and recording level setting
Press the pause 9 and record 5 keys in that order.
The Led record 14 indicates that the unit is set to record.
You can modulate the tape recording by means of the record
level L/R 19 controls. Control L controls the left channel
and control
R controls the right channel. Both stereo channels
can be regulated separately or together.
You can check that the recording level is correct by observing
the level control
meters.
The quasi peak value display permis optimum tape recor
ings.
Recording is correctly modulated if, during the loudest passages
of the program, the indicator deflects just as far as the beginning
of the red range. Brief overshoot of this limit does not affect
the recording quality
If the recording level has been set too low, the full dynamic
range of the tape is not being utilized, Overloading can produce
audible distortion.
Recording
In order to start recording, depress the pause 9 pushbutton.
The signals will now be recorded on tape.
Start via external timer
If the power lead is connected to a commercially available
timer, recording and playback can be started at a pre-selectable
time. For this purpose, the power button 1 must always
remain depressed,
If you wish to start a tape recording via the timer, depress but-
ton record 5 with the timer switched off. When the unit is
then switched on via the timer, recording starts immediately. If
wu intend to control playback via the timer, depress button
»6.
The following sections list the most important points which
you must bear in mind when recording from the various pro-
gram sources.
Recording from records
Connect the turntable and cassette deck to the amplifier.
The
amplifier selector switch must be set to PHONO.
Recording from radio
Connect the tuner and cassette deck to the amplifier or the cas-
sette deck to a receiver. Set the selector switch to TUNER
Recording from tape recorder
Connect the cassette deck and a second tape recorder to the
amplifier. This permits dubbing in both directions.
Set the selector switch to the TAPE input at which the unit
used for playback is connected.
Recording from microphone
Low and medium-impedance microphones, (200 — 1,000 Ohm
and 6.35 mm ¢ (1/4 inch) coaxial plugs are required for con-
necting your HiFi stereo cassette deck. We recommend the
HiFi Electret capacitor microphones Dual MC 304 and Dual
MC 316.
Erasing
The cassette deck erases all previous recordings when a new
recording is made.
If you want to erase a recording without
making a new one, play the cassette through with the controls
set for "recording" but with the recording level controls set
to "0".
All compact cassettes have two slots on their rear edge which
are partially covered by plastic tabs. You can prevent accidental
erasure of your own recordings by breaking out the appropriate
tab.
Pre-recorded tapes bought from cassette dealers are usually al-
ready protected against accidental erasure by removal of the
tabs.
If you wish to record on a tape protected in this way, it is only
necessary to close the slots temporarily by means of a small
piece of adhesive tape.
Please note that the additional slots present in Cr02 tapes must
not be closed by adhesive tape.
Technical features
Head
The built-in 2/4-track hard permalloy sound head has excellent
magnetic characteristics for recording and playback in conjunc-
tion with high resistance to wear.
The dual-gap erasing head guarantees complete erasure of recor-
ded program material, even with the new metal type, which is
somewhat critical in this respect.
Compact cassette system
Your HiFi stereo cassette deck is of the 2/4-track type. This
means that the total width of the tape is subdivided into four
tracks with one pair of stereo tracks in each running direction,
thus providing double recording and playback time in compari-
son with conventional 2/4-track decks in stereo mode.
Stereo recordings made with your cassette deck may be repro-
duced on any monaural cassette deck which means that stereo
and mono cassettes are fully compatible. Your cassette deck
also permits reproduction of recordings made with other cas-
sette recorders.
Maintenance
It is recommended that you clean tape heads, capstan, pinch
roller and tape guides at regular intervals.
Use a piece of clean linen cloth or a cotton swab (such as
Q-Tips), soaked in alcohol for cleaning. Do not use metal
tools, such as tweezers for cleaning and avoid touching the
tape head surfaces with your fingers. Clean the pinch roller
with a dry, lint-free cloth
Long-time lubrication of all bearings, joints and other friction
points assures trouble-free operation of your cassette deck for
years. Do not attempt to lubricate the unit yourself, since only
special lubricants can be used. Other repair and maintenance
work must only be carried out by qualified service technicians
or your nearest authorized Dual service center.
Troubleshooting
Operational malfunctions which may arise when using your
cassette deck are frequently caused by incorrect installation,
connection or operation. Possible causes and corrective measures,
are listed below. If you are unable to eliminate the problem
with the aid of this troubleshooting guide, please consult your
nearest Dual dealer or servicing agent.
(* possible cause and correction of the fault)
