Soxtec™ 2050 Automatic System
5.4.2 Selecting a Program
Select a program #1 to #9 for Analysis by pressing 7 or 8. Check that the overtem-
perature setting is correct for the solvent used in the Application Note, see tempera-
ture table, table 3, in section 5.3.4 Overtemperature Setting on page 5:7.
Note: If the overtemperature setting is not correct, or if there is
no recommendation in the table, check with the laboratory su-
pervisor that the correct setting is used.
If the application is being run for the first time and it is necessary to set up a new pro-
gram, see next section.
5.4.3 Setting Up a New Program
Use the relevant Application Note and table 3 to set the correct temperatures and ex-
traction times for the method. First select a program, with the 7 8 keys. Then use
the 4 key and the 7 8 keys to set temperature and times for the different extrac-
tion steps. When finished, wait for the display to stop blinking or press the 4 key
until you have passed the last extraction step. The recovery time should be set up ac-
cording to experience of the time needed for recovery of the solvent to the collection
vessel. A typical value is between 5 and 10 minutes depending on solvent used and
temperature. The fourth time can be used to keep the hot plate warm for up to 59 min-
utes if more analyses are to be performed later.
5.4.4 Cooling Water
Cooling water must be supplied to the system before the analysis starts. Adjust the
flow rate to 2 l/min (20 °C). The cooling water will be turned on/off automatically
when the hot plate is turned on/off.
5.4.5 Checking the Drop Rate
Warning
Danger. Diethyl ether must not be used as Solvent.
Before starting an analysis, using a new kind of solvent, the parameters to get a cor-
rect drop rate must be determined.
Set up a program with boiling time - 0 minutes, rinsing ~15 minutes and temperature
according to ASN (Application Sub Note) or temperature table, table 3 (see section
5.3.4 Overtemperature Setting on page 5:7).
Put the cups into the cup holder and add ~50 ml of solvent in each cup.
Insert the cup holder with cups into the Extraction Unit.
Start the program. Wait until 5 min. after the temperature has reached the set temper-
ature, then count the drops falling from the magnet down into the cup.
The drop rate should be 3-5 drops/s in all positions - if not, increase the temperature
5 °C and do as above.
5.4.6 Preheating
The hot plate can be preheated prior to the analysis by pressing the E key. The hot
plate will warm up to the set temperature for the program shown in the display.
