Introduction
Read the instructions for use carefully before commencing use of this device.
It contains important information regarding the safety of the user and patient.
Applanation tonometry may only be carried out by appropriately trained and
qualified medical personnel.
Device Description
The Perkins tonometer is an ophthalmic, battery-powered, reusable measuring
instrument with reusable calibration weights and either a reusable prism or a tray
of 20 Tonosafe disposable prisms.
Intended Use
The Perkins Mk3 tonometer is intended to measure Intraocular Pressure (IOP) by
applanation (applying a small flat disc to the cornea).
The tonometer calibration weights are used to apply a predetermined force to the
Perkins tonometer to show confirmation that the readable gauge displays the same
value as the weight.
Intended purpose
The manual operated Perkins tonometer is an appliance that is intended for use by
healthcare professionals for determining the Intraocular Pressure (IOP) by exerting an
external force on the cornea to which the resistance deformation (the extent of corneal
indentation) is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg).
It is specifically indicated in glaucoma disease and can be used on any patient
population.
Contraindications
The Perkins tonometer is contraindicated where medical assessment by the healthcare
professional has deemed it unsafe in the case of infection, disease or trauma.
Medical assessment is necessary and due care is to be exercised in cases of eye
infections and injuries to the cornea.
A list of known contraindications is as follows;
- Trauma/corneal ulcer
- Ruptured globe
- Infection
- Unhealed corneal abrasions or ulcers
- Inability to administer topical anaesthetic
