Ask user to stand clear of the stairlift making sure that they have a clear view of the lift.

Getting to know their stairlift - Talk the user through the key points of the stairlift .
Master power switch / wall switch - Explain the location and use of these switches.

Inform the customer that the stairlft batteries will not charge with the carriage isolator
switch in the '0' postion.
Power key - Explain the location and use of the power key. Also explain that they

have a spare if the original is lost / damaged..
Remote calling controls - Explain the use of the remote calling controls. Also

demonstrate how to replace the batteries.
Unfolding - Demonstrate how to unfold the chair and how to avoid the footrest when
6
lowering the seat.
Using the stairlift - Demonstrate how to get in the seat and put the seatbelt on (if
immobilser seatbelt is fitted explain that the lift will not work until this is on). Also
7
explain the need to keep constant pressure in the direction of travel.
Demonstrate and explain the arm isolation safety cut out, ensure the user is aware that
the downside arm has to be fully lowered in order for the stairlift to operate (if fitted).
Ask the user to sit in the chair, put the seatbelt on and travel up the stairs. Walk up
behind the stairlift and explain that it will stop automatically once it reaches the end of

the stairs. If an automatic swivel is fitted explain that they need to keep the control pod
in the required direction of travel and the chair will swivel.
Getting out of the stairlift- Show the user how to operate the swivel levers (or

automatic swivel if fitted) and swivel the chair towards the top of the stairs. Ask them to
remove the seatbelt and get out of the chair.

Folding - Demonstrate how to fold the stairlift away.

Footrest Fold Button - (if fitted). Demonstrate footrest fold button option.
Now ask the user to use the stairlift to go down the stairs, covering any of the above

that the user seems unsure about.
Explain the use of the hand-winding controls (including the 2-way automatic swivel if

fitted).

Explain the location of the safety edges and give a demonstration on how they work.
Check that all of the above has been understood. If they are unsure on any of the

above go through it with them again.

Complete handover document.
2-Way Automatic swivel - (if fitted) Demonstrate how this is used explaining that it will

only work when at the bottom of the stairs.
2-Way Manual swivel - (if fitted) Demonstrate how this is used explaining that it will

only work when at the bottom of the stairs.
Retractable Rail. Demonstrate how the retractable rail operates, explaining that the
19
area around the retractable rail should be clear before moving the stairlift.
