APPENDIX A
COMPONENT DESCRIPTION
1
Assay Controller and
Data Processor
The instrument has a preprogrammed micro
processor that controls the assay steps and
data processing. Test identification, timing and ca
libration curve or cutoff value data are contained
on a magnetic card included with each reagent kit.
Once activated by the card, the microprocessor
tracks all assay steps and converts the absor
bance values of the samples into concentration
units or cutoff values.
2
Photometer
The QuikRead 101 photometer consists of an
integrated measurement well, three lightemitting
diodes and solid state silicon detectors. The
photometer has been designed and calibrated
both for photometric and turbidimetric use. If
necessary, the instrument uses all wavelengths
to determine the test result. The magnetic card
can hold calibration curves or cutoff values for
all wavelengths.
3
Liquid Crystal Display
The liquid crystal display (LCD) provides the
user with messages and prompts for performing
each assay step, and gives test results and error
messages.
4
Magnetic Card Reader
The integrated magnetic card reader system is
provided to input information specific to individual
tests and lots and to activate specific chemistry
modes.
5
Power Supply
The instrument is powered by a power supply
supplied with the instrument. In addition to the
power supply, the instrument can use batteries
as a power source. If batteries are used, the
power supply cable must be detached from the
back of the instrument. Although batteries can be
left inside the instrument when the instrument is
used with the power supply, it is recommended
that the batteries be removed when they are not
used. An internal switch inside the cable connec
tor will switch automatically from batterypowered
use to mainspowered use. For instructions on
installing batteries, see Appendix D.
6
Printer/Serial Connection
The instrument has a builtin serial RS232C
connection. The connector type is male D9.
If this connector is used with a cable specified
in Appendix E, test results can be transferred
to a serial printer or to a computer system.
Specifications for suitable printers are available
from your local supplier.
7
Bar Code Reader Connection
The instrument has a builtin connection for a
bar code reader. The connector type is 6pin
miniDIN / PS2. This connector must not be
used for other purposes because the operating
voltage for the bar code reader is supplied via
the connector pins. This voltage can damage
other instruments.
The bar code reader is used to couple the
assay results with patient and, optionally, operator
identification (ID). Quik Link is a specific product
for connecting the QuikRead 101 Instrument to a
Laboratory or Hospital Information System. For
more information contact your local supplier.

8
Dispenser
A 1 ml buffer dispenser is included in the
instrument package. Always use a separate
dispenser for different QuikRead assays to avoid
contamination. The dispenser carton contains
small colour coded analyte stickers for marking
the dispensers. For specific instructions for
the dispenser, see QuikRead 1 ml Dispenser
Operating Manual.
