automatic mode

noTe! The automatic boat trim system is an option that is
not installed in all boats. Contact your Volvo Penta dealer
for information about retro-fitting.
adjusting the desired running trim
note! Before any settings are made, ensure that boat trim
system calibration has been carried out. Refer to the boat
trim system installation instructions.
There are two different ways to set the desired running
trim that provide different system functionality. If the de-
sired running trim is set when speed is above 5 knots
the system will compensate for any deviations from the
desired running trim fore-and-aft and athwartships. This is
the normal method.
However, if the automatic boat trim system is only re-
quired to compensate for athwartships deviations (roll),
then the desired running trim must be set when speed is
below 5 knots. The second method is recommended if
Powertrim Assistant is installed.
To set the desired running trim, run the boat at cruising
speed (planing) and trim it manually until it achieves the
desired trim
Press button A and hold it
down for more than 5 sec-
onds, but less than 15 sec-
onds. See Figure 8.
When the setting is stored in
the memory, 4 LEDs in the
upper and lower corners will
flash as confirmation. Release
the button; the lamps will stop
flashing. See Figure 9.
Once the running trim has
been set, only button A need
be depressed to activate the
automatic trim function. The
LED above button A will light
up. See Figure 10.
This procedure need only be carried out once as the run-
ning trim setting is stored in the control unit even if the
main switches are switched off.
Using automatic mode
When the system is in automatic mode the LED above
the A button is lit (green light) and the ACU controls the
interceptors so that the desired running trim setting is
achieved and maintained. The two columns of LEDs on
the control panel continually show interceptor blade posi-
tions, which makes it easy to see how the system is work-
ing.
Press the A button to exit automatic mode; the LED will
be extinguished. For safety reasons, automatic mode will

also be disconnected whenever any of the 4 manual but-
tons is depressed.
When the automatic boat trim system is switched on it will
start in the same mode it was switched off in.
Functions
The automatic boat trim system provides perfect trim for
best comfort and fuel economy even if wind speed and
direction changes, or weight distribution on board is dis-
placed. The system compensates if running trim deviates
from the desired position both fore-and-aft and athwart-
ships (or only athwartships if adjustment of the desired
trim angle was made when speed was below five knots).
control panel
The LED above the control panel A button has three lev-
els of brightness. Press the left and right buttons simulta-
neously for approx. 1 second to reduce light intensity one
level. Keep the buttons held down to reduce the intensity
further every half second. Release the buttons to stay at
the chosen LED light level. If several panels are connect-
ed to the system, only the panel being adjusted is affect-
ed. If current has been switched off the LED will light up at
the brightest level when current is switched on again.
Refer to the user instructions for the manual and auto-
matic boat trim system for adjusting the intensity of the
remaining LEDs.
Turns
The GPS unit registers the course change (the turn) and
the control unit ensures no list compensation is made as
long as the boat remains in the turn. Only fore-and-aft
compensations are made. When the boat is on a fixed
course again, thwartships (roll) compensations will be
made. This characteristic has been built into the system
to ensure optimum running trim when the boat is in a turn;
the system thus avoids compensating for the boat's natu-
ral tendency to lean into a turn.
Speed
If adjustment has been carried out so that compensation
is made for both fore-and-aft and thwartships: When the
automatic boat trim system is activated and the speed is
between 6 and 15 knots the system works with a number
of pre-defined settings for compensating for fore-and-aft
changes. Thwartships compensation is deactivated. If
speed drops below 3 knots the interceptor blades will be
retracted completely.
The automatic boat trim system reaches full functionality
at speeds above 15 knots, when both fore-and-aft and
thwartships compensations are made. If adjustment has
been carried out so that only thwartships compensation is
made: When the automatic boat trim system is activated
and speed is above 15 knots, the system will function with
thwartships compensation. Below 15 knots thwartships
compensation is deactivated. If speed drops below 12
knots the interceptor blades will be retracted completely.
extreme conditions.
The automatic boat trim system is self-adjusting in
relation to prevailing sea conditions. In calm waters it
compensates for changes faster than in rough waters.
In very heavy seas with high waves and strong wind
we recommend manual control for best comfort.
