□ Using of a spark plug with an inappropriate thermal index can cause engine damage.
■ If the engine has just run, do not touch the muffler or the spark plug because of the risk of burns.
1.
Remove spark cover plug to reach spark plug [Fig. 31];
2.
Remove the cap and unscrew the spark plug with a spark plug wrench [Fig. 32];
3.
Examine the spark plug carefully, replace it if deposits on the electrodes are important or if the
insulation is cracked or broken. Clean the spark plug with a wire brush [Fig. 33];
4.
Measure the spacing of the electrodes with a set of shims; it should be between 0.5 and 0.7 mm
[Fig.  3 3]. If adjustment is necessary, simply twist carefully the electrode side;
5.
Check the condition of the sealing washer, then screw the spark plug by hand;
6.
Using a spark plug wrench, give an extra 1/2 turn in the case of a new spark plug to compress its
washer, or a 1/8 to 1/4 turn in the case of a used spark plug and replace the cap of the spark plug.
□ The spark plug must be properly tightened, otherwise it may heat up considerably and damage
the engine.
9.3. SERVICING THE AIR FILTER
NOTE
The air filter must remain perfectly clean. A dirty filter, caused by a poor fitting or a poor maintenance,
shall damage the pump and cause engine wear. The air filter must be perfectly clean, at any time.
□ Do not clean the filtering elements with kerosene, gasoline or petrol oil.
1.
Remove the holding wing nut [(a) Fig. 34] of the air filter;
2.
Remove the protection cover [(b) Fig. 34];
3.
Control the filter element [(c) Fig. 34]. Clean and replace dirty filter elements. Always replace
damaged filter elements;
4.
Clean the filter element in warm soapy water, rinse, and allow to dry thoroughly. Or clean in
nonflammable solvent and allow to dry;
5.
Dip the filter element in clean engine oil, then squeeze out all excess oil. The engine will smoke when
started if too much oil is left in the foam;
6.
Wipe dirt from the air cleaner body and cover, using a moist rag. Be careful to prevent dirt from
entering the carburetor;
7.
Reinstall the filter element and air cleaner cover.
