• R isks related to subcutaneous infusion thera-
pies:
- systemic side effects: acute cardiac failure
and hyponatraemia
- local side effects: oedema, inflammation,
bleeding, cellulitis, erythema and pain
Duration of Use
• C hange according to CDC Guidelines and/or
Hospital or Institutional protocols.
• T he puncture site should be checked at regular
intervals.
• I ntrocan Safety® 2 Closed IV Catheter should be
removed in the event of local or systemic signs
of infection.
Application
1. Confirm all items are accessible for Introcan
Safety® 2 Closed IV Catheter insertion proce-
dure.
2. Select and prepare site per organizational poli-
cies.
3. Apply tourniquet.
4. After disinfection of the puncture site and re-
moval of the protective guard, puncture a suit-
able vein. Do not rotate catheter prior to inser-
tion. If venipuncture was successful, blood will
immediately be visible inside the transparent
flashback chamber (see figure A).
5. Lower and advance the catheter and needle
unit slightly to ensure catheter tip is in vessel
(see figure B).
6. Using the push-off plate, advance catheter off
the needle (approximately 1/8" or 3mm) and
observe blood return between the needle and
catheter to confirm catheter is in the vessel
(see figure C). After confirmation, continue ad-
vancing catheter off the needle and into vessel.
7. Stabilize the catheter hub to prevent catheter
dislodgement during needle removal. With-
draw the needle straight back with a con-
trolled and continuous motion (minimize ro-

tation and angulation of needle). Metal safety
shield will automatically attach to needle tip
as needle tip exits catheter hub (see figure D).
Blood flow from catheter hub is restricted after
needle is removed until first connection of a
luer access device only.
8. Dispose of shielded needle immediately into
sharp-proof container.
9. Immediately connect to infusion line or ac-
cessory device and cover puncture site with a
sterile and transparent dressing (see figure E).
10. Dispose IV Catheter directly after use.
