BUILDING A FIRE
CAUTION: WHEN TENDING THE STOVE
ALWAYS WEAR FIRE RETARDANT CLOTHING
AND PROTECTIVE EYEWARE.
KINDLING
1. Start with a large piece of paper, or 2-3 sheets of
newspaper in the bottom of the stove.
2. Add roughly 4 lbs of thinly cut 6" pieces of Douglas
fir strips to the top of the paper, see image Figure
16 below for how to stack kindling.
Figure 16
3. Ignite the paper for roughly 10-20 seconds.
4. Leave the door partially open to allow air to flow
and ignite the Douglas fir. Once lit, close the door.
5. After kindling burns down to about 1.1lbs, insert 4-5
more lbs of kindling.
6. Close the door immediately and let burn down to
1.1lbs.
WARNING:
• NEVER OVERFIRE YOUR STOVE. IF ANY PART
OF THE STOVE STARTS TO GLOW RED, OVER
FIRING IS HAPPENING.
• THE INSTALLATION OF A LOG CRADLE OR
GRATES IS NOT RECOMMENDED IN YOUR
WOOD STOVE. BUILD FIRE DIRECTLY ON
STOVE BOTTOM.
• KEEP DOOR CLOSED AND MAINTAIN ALL
SEAL IN GOOD CONDITION.
• ATTEMPTS TO ACHIEVE HEAT OUTPUT
RATES THAT EXCEED HEATER DESIGN
SPECIFICATIONS CAN RESULT IN
PERMANENT DAMAGE TO THE HEATER.
Single Burn Rate Wood Fire Stove
PRE-BURN
1. Once kindling has burned down to 1.1lbs, break up
the kindling to build a proper coal bed as shown in
Figure 18 below and insert the preload.
NOTE: Preload consists of three 16.25" 2x4s on the
bottom, and five 7.125" 2x4s on the top. Preload
will look like Figure 17 below.
Figure 17
2. Let the preload burn down to 5.5lbs (>15 mins
before loading the load) before opening the door
to quickly stir the preload.
3. Let the preload burn down to the low bracket of
load weight insertion (20% of the load weight).
4. At 20% of the load weight open the door and
break up the remaining pieces to build a proper
coal bed, then insert the load.
LOAD
1. At 20% of the load weight in the pre-burn, break
the pieces for the coal bed and add the load; close
the door immediately.
