In order to adjust the amount of water supplied for cooling the instrument (8-10) with the
"Water" knob (3), press the footswitch (23) gently. When the AirFlow S2 footswitch is
pressed gently it activates the water supply and then, when pressed harder, the
ultrasonic oscillations. Adjust the water flow rate so that the water just drips rather than
flows while the instrument is switched off. This basic setting ensures that the tip of the
instrument (8-10) is cooled optimally. The instrument (8-10) oscillates to atomize the
water. If the water flow rate is too high, the water will not be atomized properly and will
drip from the tip of the instrument (8-10).
Danger - Never use Piezon Scaling instruments dry. If used dry, the tips will become
hot immediately. This may cause thermal injury to the tooth. Ensure that adequate
liquid coolant is always available.
Please use the high volume evacuator on your dental unit during treatment.
Hold the high volume evacuator close to the instrument (8-10) to ensure that the water
is evacuated optimally. Do not place the evacuator directly on the tooth or instrument
(8-10) as the cooling effect at the tip of the instrument may not be sufficient. Place the
saliva ejector in the patient's mouth so that it evacuates the space beneath the tongue.
Caution - Never use Piezon unit instruments on metal or porcelain restorations. The
high frequency ultrasonic oscillations may loosen the restoration.
Treating with the Piezon unit of the AirFlow S2
Removing supragingival calculus (Instrument A)
Adjust the ultrasonic setting by turning the "Power" knob (4). When carrying out
treatment with instrument A (8) you can set the ultrasonics to maximum. Use the
"Water" knob (3) to adjust the water flow rate to the ultrasonic setting.
Never use Instrument A (8) at an angle of 90 degrees to the teeth. The Piezon
instruments oscillate to and fro 32,000 times per second. As the tip is pointed, the
highest number of oscillations take place at the imaginary extension of the tip. Move
the side of instrument A (8) along the tooth, as you would a scaler. Holding instrument
A perpendicular to the tooth would injure the enamel or, possibly, the pulp.
Hold instrument A (8), at a flat angle of no more than 30 degrees, at a tangent to the
teeth.
Remove supragingival calculus with slow backward and forward movements. Begin
removing calculus at the incisal edge and work toward the sulcus.
Finally, polish the surface of the teeth with the AirFlow unit.
