5.3 Installing the socket connector

The vacuum pump is connected to the prosthetic socket by a socket connector. A filter is installed
on the vacuum pump to protect it against dirt.
1) Install the 2R117 socket connector according to the corresponding instructions for use.
2) Shorten the hose of the socket connector to the optimal length and connect it to the filter (see
fig. 5, see fig. 6, see fig. 7).

5.4 Checking vacuum generation

Checking area 1
First check the donning process and the sealing sleeve. No pressure gauge is needed. The vacuum suctions
the sealing sleeve against the socket brim. The socket brim is clearly visible under the sealing sleeve during
the stance phase. If no vacuum is generated or the vacuum decreases, this can be identified on the sealing
sleeve.
Ask the user to put on the prosthesis. Check the process to exclude errors during donning.
Get the user to walk in order to build up a vacuum. Get the user to stand and check whether the vacuum is
maintained.
If the vacuum is not maintained: Replace the sealing sleeve with a new one.
Get the user to walk in order to build up a vacuum. Get the user to stand and check whether the vacuum is
maintained.
If the vacuum is still not maintained: The problem lies in area 2 or 3.
Checking area 3
Loosen the hose of the socket connector from the filter.
Connect the pressure gauge to the filter.
Activate the vacuum pump two to four times until a vacuum of 500 hPa to 850 hPa is reached.
If the vacuum is maintained: The vacuum pump and filter are OK. The fault is in area 2.
If the vacuum is not maintained: Either the filter is plugged or the vacuum pump is defective.
Remove the filter from the vacuum pump and connect the pressure gauge directly to the vacuum pump.
Activate the vacuum pump two to four times until a vacuum of 500 hPa to 850 hPa is reached.
If the vacuum is maintained: Replace the filter. Then check whether this measure was successful.
If the vacuum is not maintained: Send the vacuum pump to the manufacturer for inspection.
Checking area 2
Connect the pressure gauge with a T-piece between the socket connector and the vacuum pump.
Seal the opening to the socket connector on the inside of the prosthetic socket with air-tight adhesive tape
(e.g. PVC tape).
Activate the vacuum pump until a vacuum of 500 hPa to 850 hPa is reached.
If the vacuum is not maintained: The socket connector is defective. Replace the socket connector. Then
check whether this measure was successful.
If the vacuum is maintained: The glued joint of the socket connector is likely defective.
Seal the opening to the socket connector on the inside of the prosthetic socket with a small piece of paper
and air-tight adhesive tape (e.g.  PVC tape).

To check for leaks, the prosthesis is divided into areas.
1
Area 1: Prosthetic socket and sealing sleeve
Area 2: Socket connector and connection to the vacuum
2
pump
Area 3: Vacuum pump
