Maintenance Chart
Follow hourly or seasonal intervals, whichever occurs first.
First 5 Hours
• Change Oil
Every 5 Hours or Daily

In dusty conditions or when airborne debris is present,
clean more often. Replace air filter if it is very dirty.
† In dusty conditions, clean more often. Check every 25
hours.
Emissions Control
Maintenance, replacement, or repair of the emissions
control devices and systems may be performed by any
non-road engine repair establishment or individual.
However, to obtain "no charge" repairs under the terms and
provisions of the Briggs & Stratton warranty, such service
must be performed by a factory authorized dealer. See the
Emissions Warranty.
Carburetor Adjustment
The carburetor is pre-set at the factory to operate efficiently
under most conditions. If adjustments are required, see any
authorized Briggs & Stratton dealer for service assistance.
CAUTION
The manufacturer of the equipment on which this engine
is installed specifies the top speed at which the engine
will be operated. DO NOT EXCEED this speed.
Inspect Muffler And Spark Arrester
Clean all debris from muffler area. Inspect the muffler,
guard, and spark arrester, if equipped, for damage or
plugging from deposits. Clean parts of debris and deposits
or, if necessary, replace using only original equipment parts.
Fire could result.
• Replacement parts must be the same and installed in
the same position as the original parts.

How To Change The Oil
Remove Oil
1. With engine off but still warm, disconnect the spark plug
wire (A, Figure 6) and keep it away from the spark plug.
2. I you drain the oil from the top of the engine through the
engine oil fill (B, Figure 7), make sure to keep the spark
plug side (C) up. Drain the oil into an appropriate
receptacle.
3. If you drain the oil from the bottom of the engine, remove
the oil drain plug (D, Figure 8). Drain the oil into an
appropriate receptacle.
Note: See the illustration of some of the various types of
oil drain plugs (D, Figure 8).
4. Replace and tighten the oil drain plug.
Before adding oil
• Place engine level.
• Clean the oil fill area of any debris.
Extended Dipstick
1. Remove the dipstick (B, Figure 2) and wipe with a clean
cloth.
2. Pour the oil slowly into the engine oil fill (D). DO NOT
OVERFILL. After adding oil, wait one minute and then
recheck the oil level.
3. Insert and tighten the dipstick.
4. Remove the dipstick and check the oil level. Make sure
the oil is at the FULL mark (C) on the dipstick.
5. Replace and tighten the dipstick.
How To Service The Air Filter
Gasoline and its vapors are extremely
flammable and explosive.
Fire or explosion can cause severe burns
or death.
• Never start or run the engine with the air cleaner
assembly or the filter removed as a fire or explosion
could result.
1. Remove the screw (A, Figure 9) from the top of the air
filter assembly (B).
2. To prevent debris from falling into the carburetor,
carefully remove the air filter assembly.
3. Remove the foam element (C) from the air filter base.
4. Wash the foam element in liquid detergent and water.
Squeeze dry the foam element in a clean cloth.
CAUTION
Do not use pressurized air or solvents to clean the filter.
Pressurized air can damage the filter and solvents will
dissolve the filter.
5. Saturate the foam element with clean engine oil. To
remove the excess engine oil, squeeze the foam
element in a clean cloth.
6. Install the foam element into the air filter base.
7. Install the air filter assembly onto the carburetor and
secure with screw.
