Designated use
The safety evaluation unit is part of the overall system or machine and is for
the purpose of assuming safety-related functions.
This is done by monitoring signals, such as safety sensors, emergency-stop
buttons, position switches, no-contact protective equipment (BWS). The
product must be used only in accordance with the descriptions below.

Safety information
- Ensure that the safety evaluation unit is installed and put into
operation only by specially trained, authorized personnel.
- Only install and put the device into operation once you have
read and understood the operating instructions and are familiar
with the applicable regulations on occupational safety and
accident prevention.
- Ensure that the appropriate external fuses
cations" from page
- Ensure that the safety evaluation unit is only used to protect
against dangers.
- Ensure that all applicable safety requirements for the machine in
question are observed.
- Ensure that all applicable European directives and national
laws/directives are observed.
- Ensure that the control output is only used for displaying the
operational status of the safety evaluation unit.
- Residual risks are not known when the instructions in this man-
ual are adhered to.
5
Warning against misuse
- In the event of improper use or manipulation, the safety evalua-
tion unit cannot be used without risk to persons or damage to
machine or system parts. Please also observe the relevant infor-
mation stipulated ISO 14119.
- Ensure that no external component causes current or voltage
peaks that are higher than the specified electrical data of the
safety evaluation. Current or voltage peaks are produced for ex-
ample by capacitive or inductive loads.
- Exceeding the electrical specifications of the safety evaluation
unit (e.g., in the event of defective wiring or short circuits) can
damage the system irreparably. Non-compliance can result in
reduced service life.
6
Exclusion of liability
No liability can be accepted for damage or outages resulting from non-compliance
with this instruction manual. The manufacturer is not liable for damage resulting
from the use of spare parts or accessories not approved by the manufacturer.
Any unauthorized repairs, modifications and additions are not permitted for safety
reasons and the manufacturer is also not liable for any resulting damage.

Function
4 safety inputs safety inputs, which can be connected differently, connect the
safety and control outputs respectively depending on the configurable, logical
connection. In addition, there are two inputs for reading EDM and start buttons
back.

A control output must not be used for the safety function!
Configuration options
On our website, www.elobau.com, you will find the eloFlex configurator which
allows you to create your required configuration step by step. Clicking on un-
derlined terms and functions will open an explanatory window to explain the
items in more detail.
The micro-controller-controlled safety evaluation unit can be delivered with the
following configuration options.
Each component can be individually customized.
Safety inputs 1–4
(NO/NO) (-/+)
(NO/NC) PL e (+/+) / PL d (-/+)
(NC/NC) (-/+)
OSSD (safe semiconductor ) (+/+)
If OSSD is selected as the safety input, only (+) potentials from external or
from device terminals 8, 16, 24, 32 may be used.
Upon selection of OSSD at the safety input, a sensor with cross-short detec-
tion must be used or any errors resulting from cross-shorts must be ruled out.
EDM (External Device Monitoring)
For monitoring external switching devices (contactors, relays, etc.) connected
to the safety outputs to detect a dangerous failure (e.g., from welded contacts).
For this purpose, a feedback contact (NC contact) is connected to the EDM/start
input in series with 24 V DC and (if present) to the start button
diagram" on page
22).
If the switching device fails, the feedback contact remains open; therefore, a
start is not possible and the error is detected.
The use of this function is particularly important for the diagnostic coverage
DC_avg (DIN EN ISO 13849-1).

1) When selecting the logic operator, ensure that the resulting function fulfills
the specified safety function and corresponds to the specified properties.
2) In the event of an error, the switch-off delay is not followed. The outputs
switch off within the risk time. After the delay time has elapsed, the safety out-
put switches off regardless of the status of the safety input that is then present.
All enabling conditions must be fulfilled for switching back on.
3) OR logic: If several safety inputs are assigned to one or more outputs by
means of OR logic, it is sufficient for one safety input to be actuated correctly
and without error in order to switch through this (these) output(s).
