The device is an optical weld seam tracking sensor. A weld seam tracking sensor is an optoelectronic device
comprising a laser source, a camera, processing electronics and software. It uses laser triangulation to
measure the position of the seam on the workpiece below the sensor in order to provide the controller's
control system with the information needed to correct the trajectory.
The device is intended for attachment to a controller (e.g. a robot) or in systems with a fixed processing
device and moving workpieces. It is attached using a quick-release plate.
The device transmits visible laser radiation through the use of a laser line generator. This is a semiconductor
laser with a range of 650 nm to 699 nm. Lens combinations disperse the laser beam emitted by the diode
on the workpiece in a thin, even line. The laser is a visible, red 25 mW laser and projects a line (not a dot)
on the workpiece under the sensor head. The laser is a continuous line laser, i.e. it is not pulsed.
The camera, lens and lighting are housed in the sensor body. The device must be supplied with air or
shielding gas during the welding process to protect the sensor head against welding fumes, weld spatter,
dust and liquids.
As the welding process generates heat, the device must be sufficiently cooled.
