2 Description and Function
2.1 Application
The 3R105=1 and 3R106=1 Polycentric Knee Joints are to be used solely for the prosthetic
fitting of lower limb amputations.
According to the Otto Bock Classification System
patients weighing up to 75 kg /165 lbs with a moderate activity level. The joints may also
be suitable for higher activity levels. The 3R105=1 Knee Joint has been designed for knee
disarticulation amputees and features a lamination anchor for socket attachment.
2.2 Construction (fig. 2 + 3)
During the conception of these knee joints, the highest priority was given to the large flexion
angle and smooth swing phase control.
The upper joint section (1) and lower joint section (2) are connected by the anterior links (3)
and the posterior link (4) and form a four-bar linkage. At full extension, the instantaneous
center of rotation is located above the joint and behind the weight-bearing line. This creates
knee stability during stance phase.
To control swing phase, the piston rod of the pneumatic unit is linked to the upper joint
section by a connecting rod. The flexion and extension resistances are independently
adjustable. In addition, tension of the extension-assist spring can be adjusted. Reversing
action of the extension assist occurs at approx. 110° of flexion.
The distal portion of the pneumatic cylinder has an integrated tube clamp and accepts the
tube adapter which is included with the knee. Connection to the prosthetic socket is provided
by the lamination anchor (3R105=1) or by the adjustable pyramid (3R106=1) respectively.
Attention
You are not authorized to loosen or remove the connection adapter!
2 Alignment and Assembly
A correct alignment begins with a determination of the individual's weight-bearing line and
then transfering the measurements to the prosthetic components.
The position of the axes influences the joint's function. Standard bench alignment is
