Preliminary remark : All the instructions contained in this manual
refer to a mobile fall arrest system on flexible ( EN353-2) or rigid
(E353-1) securing system comprising a fixed installation and a
guided-type fall arrest device for each user. All references made
to a PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) denote a PPE against
falls from a height.
1 Priority warning
1) The purpose of the STOPCABLE lifeline is to control serious
risks of people falling. Consequently it is essential, for safe instal-
lation and use of the equipment, that you read this manual clo-
sely and comply strictly with the instructions provided both befo-
re and during installation and use of the lifeline.
2) This manual should be entrusted to the person responsable
for the lifeline and be kept available to all users or installers.
Extra copies can be obtained from Tractel SAS, on request.
3) The STOPCABLE lifeline can only be used when combined
with and linked up to a full fall arrest device harness. The device
should serve as a system to prevent or stop any falls from a
height in conformity with the applicable safety standards and
regulations.
4) The sign plate, to be positioned at each access point of the
lifeline, must remain perfectly legible as long as the lifeline is in
use. Tractel SAS will supply additional signs upon simple
request.
5) The STOPCABLE lifeline must only be used by persons mee-
ting the physical and psychological aptitude requirements when
using this type of height protection equipment. In the event of a
doubt, contact your personal doctor or your workplace physician;
use of this equipment is prohibited for pregnant women.
All STOPCABLE lifeline users should have received prior trai-
ning, in safe conditions, covering both theoretical and practical
use of the equipment, and associating PPE in compliance with
applicable safety requirements. The training should include com-
prehensive information on the chapters of this user manual.
6) The operation, maintenance and management of the STOP-
CABLE lifeline should be placed under the responsibility of peo-
ple who know the safety regulations and the standards that apply
to this kind of equipment and the accessories associated with it.
Every responsible person must have read and understood this
manual. The initial commissioning should be the subject of veri-
fication by an appropriate person, for installation conformity with
the prior study file and this manual.
7) The person responsible for the operation of the lifeline should
check and ensure the constant conformity of this lifeline, and that
of the associated PPE, with the safety requirements, rules and
Standards that apply. They should ensure the compatibility of the
associated PPE, both between each item and with the lifeline.
WARNING : Should the STOPCABLE lifeline not be equipped
with an energy absorber at the top end, the person supervising
work by persons protected by the lifeline must ensure that each
user's fall arrest device is equipped with an energy absorber
secured by a safety cable.
8) The lifeline and associated equipment must never be used if
there are any visible signs showing that it may not be in good
condition. When installing the system, the safety functions
should not show any signs of damage. Should a visual inspection
reveal a defect, the defect must be corrected before the lifeline is
used. Written authorization by the responsible person is required
before the lifeline can be returned to service. A periodic inspec-
tion of the STOPCABLE lifeline and associated PPE should be
scheduled at least once a year, as indicated in chapter 6, under
the supervision of a person appropriately trained for this purpo-
se. This training can be provided by Tractel SAS. The inspection
must be carried out in compliance with Directive 89/656/CEE and
the indications given in this manual.
9) Before each usage sequence, the user should carry out a
visual inspection of the lifeline in order to ensure that it is in good
condition for use, that the associated PPE are also in good repair
and that they are compatible, correctly in place and connected.
10) The lifeline should only be used for fall prevention, as speci-
fied in this manual. Any other usage is strictly prohibited. More
especially, it should never be used as a suspension system.
It should never be used by more than one person at a time, and
never be subjected to an effort higher than that specified herein.
11) It is prohibited to repair or modify parts of the STOPCABLE
lifeline, or to use parts which are not supplied or recommended
by Tractel SAS. The dismantling of the Stopcable lifeline can pre-
sent a high risk of bodily or material harm (lash-back). This dis-
mantling must only be carried out by a technician that knows how
to handle the risk of dismantling a tensioned cable.
12) Tractel SAS declines all responsibility for the assembly of the
STOPCABLE lifeline, if this is done without its supervision.
13) When any point of the STOPCABLE lifeline has been put
under strain by a user falling, the entire lifeline, and more espe-
cially the anchors, seals and securing points located in the fall
zone, as well as any PPE involved in the fall must ALWAYS be
verified before being returned to service. This verification should
be carried out in compliance with the instructions given in this
manual, and by a person qualified for this act. Only this person
will have the authority to authorize, in writing, return to service of
the equipment. Disposable components or items should be
thrown away and replaced in compliance with the instruction
manuals that come with these components and or items.
In particular, the following parts should be replaced if :
• The mechanism locking the fall arrest device on the cable has any
sticking points when moved : Replace the fall arrest device.
• The fall arrest device does not lock on the cable: Replace the fall
arrest device.
• A simple action on the fall arrest device allows removal of the unit
from the cable (device bent / inappropriate connector...): Replace
the fall arrest device / use an appropriate connector ( M10).
• The unit does not slide or slides improperly on the cable (cable is
damaged or device is damaged) : Replace the fall arrest device
or the cable after inspecting it.
• Cable not tensioned due to following :
- No counterweight (line EN353-2): Install counterweight.
- Line poorly tensioned or not tensioned at all per EN353-1 (line
equipped with tensioner with pre-tension indicator) : Tension the
line.
- Line absorber triggered following incorrect use or fall of a person :
Replace the cable, the fall arrest device, and the absorber, and
check the condition of the top and bottom anchor points.
- Anchor point improperly secured or bent subsequent to fall of a
person : Secure the anchor points in compliance with applicable
standards and replace the top anchor point.
• Cable is damaged :
- Strand(s) broken.
- Cable deformed or crushed subsequent to fall of a person :
Replace the cable, fall arrest device, and absorber, and check the
condition of top and bottom anchor points.
• Device absorber triggered (length > 200 mm and/or wear / ruptu-
re of strap threads): Replace cable, fall arrest device, absorber,
