Connecting the Communication with the Data Acquisition Module via
Optical Fibers
If an increased exposure due to electromagnetic interferences is to be expected for the internal communication
network of the PV diesel hybrid system, the use of optical fibers is recommended. The optical fiber terminal is however
optional and is not available in the basic configuration of the Fuel Save Controller.
Eye Injuries due to laser light
In optical fibers, laser light is used for data transmission. Direct incident laser light may damage the eye and can
lead to permanent retina damage.
• Never look directly into optical-fiber terminals or connected optical fibers.
• Ensure that the optical fiber is not connected to any active source before performing any work. To do this,
disconnect the connected devices.
• Always seal unused pin connectors or plugs with protective caps.
Damage to optical fibers due to too tight bend radii
Excessive bending or kinking will damage the optical fibers.
• Observe the minimum permissible bend radii of the optical fibers.
Cable requirements:
☐ Maximum cable length: 2 km
☐ Optical fiber type: multimode
☐ Plug type for SMA Fuel Save Controller: LC
☐ Plug type for Data Acquisition Module: SC
☐ The color coding of the optical fiber must be used consistently in the photovoltaic diesel hybrid system.
Requirement:
☐ A splice box must be present to connect the Data Acquisition Module to the communication network of the PV
diesel hybrid system.
☐ An optical-fiber module must be plugged into the pin connector X2 of the router K201 in the
SMA Fuel Save Controller.
☐ The requirements for the internal communication network of the PV diesel hybrid system must be observed (see
Section 6.8.1, page 35).
Procedure:
1. Connect the cable to the Fuel Save Controller:
• Insert one cable end into the Fuel Save Controller (see Section 9.1, page 47).
• Remove the protective covers on the optical-fiber module of the SMA Fuel Save Controller and on the optical-
fiber plug.
• Clean optical surfaces (e.g. front side of the plug). For this purpose, use a cleaner with bound nitrogen (e.g.
methyl or ethyl alcohol).
• Connect the plug of the optical fiber to the router K201 of the Fuel Save Controller using pin connector 2.
2. Connect the cable to the Data Acquisition Module:
