5.5
Danger of fire in the tracheobronchial system
The argon plasma can ignite flammable, combustible materials
(e.g. plastics)! Ignition can only occur though if there is also a
fire-supporting gas present, such as oxygen, or it is mixed with
the argon and applied to the combustible materials. This partic-
ularly applies to highly concentrated oxygen or pure oxygen. For
this reason it is absolutely imperative that you observe the fol-
lowing rules:
• Before and particularly during APC, never introduce oxygen
to the tracheobronchial system. This also applies to other
combustible or fire-supporting gases and liquids.
• If you apply APC for longer than a few seconds, apply the ox-
ygen and APC alternately.
• You can find a detailed description and additional rules of
application in the pulmonology user brochure.
5.6
Gas embolisms, gas emphysema
In order to prevent gas embolisms, the argon flow rate must not
be set so high that argon is injected into open vessels. To pre-
vent gas embolisms or emphysemas, never point the distal end
of APC probes directly at open vessels or press it against tissue.
5.7
Danger of unintentional damage to nerve
structures
Bear in mind that during an APC application in the direct vicinity
of nerve structures stimulation may be induced by electric cur-
rents.
In the case of nerves which require protection it is advisable to
keep the APC activation time short and adapt maximum power
output to the required indication.
