1.2 Fitting the components, Golf
Shut off all of the consumers, switch off the ignition and remove the ignition key.

Note
The sensor installation holes must be drilled in the positions marked -arrows- on the inside of the bumper cover.
Remove the bumper cover.

Mark and punch the drilling points on the interior side of the bumper cover.
Pre-drill with a ∅ 2 mm drill.
Liberally apply adhesive tape in the areas where the holes are to be drilled in order to protect the visible side of the
bumper covering.
Drill the holes from the outside with a Forstner drill bit to ∅ 20 mm and then deburr.
Take the parcel shelf and the boot mat out of the vehicle.

Run the connecting wires numbered "1" to "4" on the sensor wiring harness from the inside of the bumper cover to
the outside. Wire "1" begins in the right hand (facing forwards) installation hole drilled in the bumper covering, the
wires "2" to "4" are fitted consecutively.
Degrease the inside of the bumper covering using a suitable cleaning agent.
Secure the wiring harness using the socket cable ties supplied to the bumper cover -arrows-.

Note
◆
The following steps can only be completed after the paint on the sensors is completely dry.
◆
For reasons of clarity, the figure shows a dismantled sensor.
◆
The correct position of the sensors can be seen using the markings in the outer ring of the sensors - these must
point upwards.
◆
The plug -3- is designed such that it can only be plugged into the connector socket -1- on the sensor -2- in one
position.
Connect the plug -3- to the sensors' connector socket -1-.
Push the coverings -4- over the sensors -2- and clip the sensors into the holes in the bumper covering.

Remove the original grommet -arrow- to the left rear on the underside of the vehicle.
Note
Vehicles with a tow hook are already fitted with a grommet -arrow- instead of the stop.
In this case remove the wiring grommet from the sensor wiring harness supplied. Widen the existing grommet using
a pair of crimp grip pliers and pull the sensor wiring harness through this into the vehicle interior.
If it is not possible to widen the grommet is not possible, make an extra hole in the existing wiring grommet and pull
the sensor wiring harness through this into the vehicle interior. Seal the additional drilled hole with a suitable sealant.
Reassemble the bumper cover in reverse order. When doing this, pull the sensor wiring harness into the vehicle interior.
Fit the wiring grommet where necessary.

Degrease the locations where the buzzer unit -1- and the control unit -2- will be fitted on the left of the luggage
compartment using a suitable cleaning agent.
Attach the buzzer unit -1- and the control unit -2- with the double-sided adhesive tape included in the scope of delivery.
Connect the black single wire -3- from the wiring harness to the vehicle earthing point.
Unwind approximately 50 mm of the harness protective tape on the vehicle wiring -arrows-.
Cut the wire to the vehicle's reversing light.
Identify the wires as per the vehicle's circuit diagram or with a voltage tester, e.g. on the connector -1- for the tail light
Crimp one end of the cut wire -4- in a crimp connector -5-.
Crimp the free end of the cut wire -7- together with the red single wire -6- of the power wiring harness in the crimp
connector -5-.
Heat-shrink the crimp connector -5- to seal it, using the hot air blower in the -VAS 1978- wiring harness repair set.
Replace the harness protective tape.
