• Obvious length differences in the leg length for
multi-leg chain slings
• Indications of a widening of the hook, i.e. e.g.
noticeable enlargement of the mouth aperture. The
enlargement of the mouth aperture should not exceed
10 % of the nominal value (catalogue dimension "m"
Fig. 12.4) or be such that the hook safety latch does
not trip (Fig. 12.5)
• Wear and tear (thickness decrease) in the hook base
≥ 5 % (catalogue dimension "h" Fig. 12.4)
• Damages such as: Cuts, notches, grooves, linear
cracks, excessive corrosion, discolouration due to
heat influence, bent or twisted chain links or other
failures
• Bolt diameter reduced by 10 % of its rated dimension
(catalogue dimension)

• Fittings and accessories of chain slings: Exploitation
is prohibited in the event of mechanical damage due
to crushing, notches or crack formation, deformation
by bending, twisting or indentation, damage to safety
latches and cross-section reductions of 5 % (D, B)
and more in eyes, bolts, stirrups of shackles and
hooks, widening of hooks (opening C) by more than
10 %. An opened safety latch indicates the overloa-
ding of the hook.

13. Repair

The following repair measures may only be performed
by qualified persons with the necessary knowledge and
skills.
In the case of the repair of a chain leg the chain is to
be replaced in its entire length. Single parts that are
broken, visually deformed or stretched or severely
corroded, with deposits that cannot be removed (e.g.
welding sputter), deep cuts, notches, grooves, cracks
or which are overheated, must be replaced. Missing
safety devices such as latches, triggers, pins or
defective, broken or deficient springs must be replaced.
Use only original PFEIFER spare parts and accessories
of the appropriate quality grade and nominal size when
replacing. Use only new bolts, clamping sleeves and
other safety elements.
Missing WLL identification tags must be replaced by a
new tag after inspection and if necessary after repair of
the suspension, provided the carrying capacity can be
clearly identified on the basis of the stamping of the
individual parts and their design.
Documentation
The tests are to be performed by a qualified person and
their results and the repair are to be documented in the
chain card file and must be kept in storage over the
entire service life of the chain. These records and the
test certificate or the certificate of conformity of the
manufacturer are to be shown upon demand to the
respective national factory inspectorate.
