3.3 Performing the inhalation

CAUTION
Before the patient starts inhaling, ensure that all parts are firmly connected to each
other. Otherwise, insufficient dosage may be delivered.
CAUTION
Children younger than 18 months should inhale four to six times; children older than
18 months should inhale deeply two to four times. Otherwise, insufficient dosage
may be delivered.
CAUTION
If you use a mask, make sure that the mask completely covers both corners of the
mouth and the nose. Otherwise, the treatment can be less effective due to es-
caping aerosol, because of underdosage, for example. For possible side effects of
escaping aerosol, please read the instructions for use of the medication in question.
For adults, one breath is enough to inhale the medication from the VORTEX.
A useful tip for helping babies and infants to inhale using a mask: Actuate the
metered dose inhaler a moment before placing the mask on the child's face. This
makes it easier to work with.
A useful tip for visually checking breathing
(e.g., with infants): The valves must visibly
open when exhaling.
• Tell the patient to take the VORTEX mouth-
piece between the teeth and close his/her
lips around it.
Alternatively: Place the mask gently on
the patient's face. Mouth and nose must be
covered.
• Actuate the metered dose inhaler at the start of a deep, slow intake of breath.
• Tell the patient to hold his/her breath briefly, and then breathe out slowly into the
mouthpiece or mask.
