1.4 WARNINGS
• Do not use the HME cassette without assembling it first with Provox
FreeHands FlexiVoice Speaking Valve or Provox HME Cap. The HME can
get stuck in the attachment holder when used by itself (Fig. 8).
• Do not use Provox FreeHands FlexiVoice with any other attachment devices
than original Provox HME attachment devices. The product can get stuck in
the attachment device. The attachment device then has to be removed or may
be damaged, possibly leading to restricted breathing.
• Do not reuse any part of the Provox FreeHands FlexiVoice between patients.
This may cause cross contamination. The device is intended for single
patient use only.
1.5 PRECAUTIONS
• Do not modify the product. The speaking function and/or HME function will
be lost.
• Always clean the speaking valve according to the instructions below. If
the product is not properly cleaned, it may cause infection and product
malfunction.
• Do not administer medicated nebulizer treatment over the device since the
medication can become deposited in the device.
• Do not use humidifiers or heated humidified oxygen via a mask over the
tracheostoma while using the device. The HME will become too wet. If
oxygen therapy is required, use only non-heated humidified oxygen.
2. Instructions for use
2.1 Checkout procedures
Before each use, check that the speaking valve and HME cassette are undamaged
and that the speaking valve functions as intended. It should easily turn into the
locked mode and automatic speaking mode (Fig. 2). If the device does not function
as intended or seems damaged, do not use the device and get a replacement.
2.2 Operating instruction
Do not use the speaking valve during sleep. The opening of the speaking valve
may be covered or the speaking valve may unintentionally be turned to speaking
mode resulting in restricted breathing. During sleep, use a Provox XtraHME
cassette or a Provox HME Cap assembled with a HME cassette (Fig. 9).
Membrane strength selection
Try the Medium membrane (2 dots) first. If you experience unintended closing
of this membrane during normal breathing or light activity, try the Strong or the
XtraStrong membrane (3 or 4 dots). If you feel it takes too much effort to close
the Medium membrane for speaking, try the Light membrane (1 dot). Make
sure the membrane does not close unintentionally during regular breathing.
You can also use a stronger membrane when you are more active and a lighter
one when you are less active.
