5.5.
MUSCLE STIMULATION: TONIC FIBRES (INITIAL STAGE) (MF)
1. General:
Programme to evoke a comfortable interrupted tetanic contraction by means of
interferential current.
2. Indication:
First stage of rehabilitation of striated muscles with the objective to influence the twitch
speed of slow-twitch (= tonic) fibres.
3. Treatment time:
15 minutes
4. Remarks:
No DC component, the risk for electrochemical damage (chemical burn) is minimal.
5. Programme:
IF, 2,5 kHz, AMF 20 Hz, contraction rhythm 2/5/1/16, 15 min.
6. Sensation:
Gradually increasing stimulation. Relatively long hold time followed by long interval.
7. Intensity level:
Adjust intensity level until a smooth tetanic contraction occurs. Do not increase inten-
sity during operation. Discontinue treatment if contraction strength weakens.

MUSCLE STIMULATION: TONIC FIBRES (FINAL STAGE) (TENS)
1. General:
Programme to evoke a comfortable interrupted tetanic contraction by means of
interferential current. This programme can be regarded as a continuation of programme
5.5.
2. Indication:
Advanced stage of rehabilitation of striated muscles with the objective to influence the
twitch speed of slow-twitch (= tonic) fibres.
3. Treatment time:
15 minutes
4. Remarks:
No DC component, the risk for electrochemical damage (chemical burn) is minimal.
5. Programme:
BF.SYM., 300 µs, 20 Hz, contraction rhythm 2/3/1/6, 15 min.
6. Sensation:
Gradually increasing stimulation (slow ramp-up and fast ramp-down) followed by an
interval.
7. Intensity level:
Adjust intensity level until a smooth tetanic contraction occurs. Do not increase inten-
sity during operation. Discontinue treatment if contraction strength weakens.
