4. WAREHOUSE STORAGE
4.1 Short term storage (less than two months)
The machine shall be stored in a suitable warehouse with controllable environment. A good warehouse or
storage point features:
A steady temperature, preferably ranging between 5°C and 50°C.
Low relative humidity of the air, possibly below 75%. The machine temperature must be kept above the
dew point to avoid humidity condensation inside the machine. Anti-condensation heaters (if any) must
be under voltage and their operation must be periodically checked. In case of machines without anti-
condensation heaters, it is necessary to use an alternative heating method to avoid the formation of
condensation in the machine.
A steady support without excessive vibrations and shocks. Position two suitable rubber wedges under
the feet of the machine to isolate it, if you reckon that the vibrations are too intense.
Ventilated, clean air, without dust and corrosive gases. Protection from insects and parasites.
If it is necessary to store the machine outdoor, it must not be left in the packaging used for transport. Instead,:
It must be removed from the packing.
It must be covered to prevent rain from entering into the machine, but at the same time the covering
must allow machine ventilation.
It must be placed onto rigid supports at least 100 mm high, to avoid direct contact with the floor.
It must be well aerated. If the machine is left in the packing used for transport (in case it is a crate), you
need to drill some openings big enough to ensure aeration.
It must be protected from insects and parasites.
4.2 Long term storage (more than two months)
Besides the provisions described for the short term storage, it is necessary:
To measure the winding insulation strength with related temperature (every three weeks, see Chapter
5.1).
To check the conditions of the varnished surfaces every six months. If corrosion signs are detected,
remove the varnish and restore it.
To check the conditions of the anti-corrosion varnish on bare metallic surfaces (such as shaft ends)
every six months. If corrosion signs are detected, remove them with emery paper and repeat the anti-
corrosion treatment.
Grease lubricated bearings
The grease lubricated bearings do not require maintenance during warehouse storage; the periodical rotation of
the shaft helps to prevent the corrosion due to contact and grease hardening
If storage time exceeds 3 months, we recommend that every 3 months you perform 5 rotations of the generator
shaft, stopping it at 90° with respect to the start position.
If the machine remains for a prolonged time in a humid place, we recommend that you dry the windings before the
commissioning.
The roller bearings do not require maintenance during warehouse storage; the periodical rotation of the shaft helps to
prevent the corrosion due to contact and grease hardening.
5. INSTALLATION AND COMMISSIONING
Preliminary checks
Before installation:
check that the generator rated data match the system characteristics,
remove the protective paint from all the coupling surfaces, like the surfaces of joints and flanges (and
the protruding part of the axis for dual-support generators).
The single-support generators are shipped equipped with a locking bracket between joint and union.
Before installing the machine, remove the bracket.
The alternator shall be installed in a site large enough to allow air to be directly exchanged with the atmosphere.
It is essential that the air intake and discharge openings are not obstructed; in addition, the machine position
must be such that hot air is not directly sucked in.
Make sure that inspections and maintenance operations can be performed while the machine is
running.
