PleurX Peritoneal Catheter Description
The PleurX Peritoneal Catheter consists of a
fenestrated silicone catheter with a valve mechanism
and a polyester cuff. A barium sulfate stripe runs the
entire length of the catheter. The valve is designed to
prevent the passage of air or fluid in either direction
unless it is accessed with the specifically matched
drainage line or vacuum bottles provided by
CareFusion.

Indications
The PleurX Peritoneal Catheter Mini Kit (REF 50-9050)
is indicated for:
• Intermittent drainage of symptomatic, recurrent,
malignant ascites that does not respond to
medical management of the underlying disease
• Palliation of symptoms related to recurrent
malignant ascites
• For Peritoneal Placement Only
The PleurX Drainage Kits are indicated for use with
either the PleurX Peritoneal Catheter Kit or the PleurX
Pleural Catheter Kit.

Contraindications
Use of the PleurX Peritoneal Catheter Mini Kit and
the PleurX Drainage Kit is contraindicated in the
following situations:
1. When the peritoneal cavity is multi-loculated, and
the drainage of a single loculation would not be
expected to provide relief of dyspnea or other
symptoms.
2. When there is a coagulopathy.
3. When the peritoneal cavity is infected.
Warnings
Do not put anything except the access tip of the
lockable drainage line or PleurX Vacuum Bottles into
the PleurX Catheter valve since this could damage
the valve. A damaged valve may allow air into the
body or let fluid leak out through the valve when not
draining.
Cautions
For single use only. Re-use may result in a non-
functional product or contribute to cross
contamination.
Sterile technique should be used when placing and
draining the catheter.
Individual patient anatomy, such as thin or weak
abdominal wall, may require procedural variations to
reduce the risk of leakage around the catheter.
Care must be taken when inserting the needle to
avoid puncturing or lacerating the liver or bowel.
Damage to the guidewire may result if withdrawn

through the needle.
Exercise care when placing the catheter to prevent it

from coming into contact with surfaces such as
drapes or towels. Silicone rubber is highly
electrostatic and attracts airborne particles and
surface contaminants.
Use rubber-shod instruments when handling the
catheter. Possible cuts or tears can occur if rubber-
shod instruments are not used.
Pinch Clamp
Place a thumb over the end of the sheath as the
dilator is removed to avoid peritoneal fluid leakage.
Care must be taken not to bend or kink the sheath.
Damage to the sheath may prevent passage of the
Luer Lock
catheter.
Do not use forceps on the introducer to break its
handle and/or peel the sheath.
Exercise care when placing ligatures to avoid cutting
or occluding the catheter.
In malignant ascites patients, paracentesis-related
hypotension is uncommon, but has been
documented. Use of IV fluid replacement and/or
administration of colloidal agents can reduce the risk
of hypotension. Additionally, initial drainage should
be no more than 6L in the first 24 hours.
