1.
Disassemble the Web Grab. First, remove the Locking Pin. Second, remove the Web Grab Handle.
2.
Reassemble the Web Grab around the lifeline. First, place the Web Grab Handle pointing upwards, with the shoe
placed firmly against the lifeline. Second, reinsert the Locking Pin. Ensure that the Web Grab is installed with the Web
Grab Handle pointing upwards.
3.
Pull down on the Web Grab to ensure that it is installed securely.
4.
Attach one of the Carabiners on the end of the R550 Rescue & Escape Device to the Handle of the Web Grab. This will
enable use of the R550 Rescue & Escape Device to simultaneously raise the lifeline attached to the Web Grab.
3.7
INSTALLATION OF THE EDGE PROTECTOR: The Edge Protector may be used with the R550 Rescue Device to protect
the lifeline of the R550 Rescue Device from a sharp edge or corner. See Figure 21 for reference. To install the Edge
Protector:
1.A. Structure ledge: When installing the Edge Protector on the ledge of a structure, run the lifeline (A) of the R550
Rescue Device horizontally over the Edge Protector. The carabiner (B) of the Edge Protector should attach to an
anchorage point directly behind the Edge Protector.
1.B. Ladder Rung: When installing the Edge Protector on a ladder rung, run the lifeline (A) of the R550 Rescue Device
vertically over the Edge Protector. The carabiner (B) of the Edge Protector should attach to an anchorage point
directly behind the Edge Protector, preferably on the ladder itself..
2.
When using the Edge Protector, ensure that the lifeline is directed straight over the Edge Protector. Directing the
lifeline at an angle may cause the lifeline to disengage from the Edge Protector.
3.8
INSTALLATION OF THE MICRO-PULLEY: The Micro-Pulley may be used in conjunction with the Anchor Slings to
redirect the lifeline of a fallen worker, thereby relieving pressue and allowing the worker to be rescued. See Figure 22 for
reference. To install the Micro-Pulley:
1.
Install the Anchor Sling over a beam of the structure, as directed in Section 3.3. Verify that the carabiner (A) is
properly secured.
2.
Open the Micro-Pulley (B) by turning one of the halves horizontal. Thread the redirected lifeline (C) through the
Micro-Pulley.
3.
Close the Micro-Pulley (B) around the lifeline (C). Open and close the carabiner (A) around the Micro-Pulley, as seen
in Figure 22.3.

USE
4.1
BEFORE EACH USE: Verify that your work area and Personal Fall Arrest System (PFAS) meet all criteria defined in
Section 2 and a formal Rescue Plan is in place. Inspect the R550 Rescue System per the 'User' inspection points defined
on the "Inspection and Maintenance Log" (Table 2). If inspection reveals an unsafe or defective condition, do not use the
system. Remove the system from service and destroy, or contact 3M regarding replacement or repair.
4.2
RESCUE APPLICATIONS: The R550 Rescue System may be used for rescue applications according to the following
methods:
;
Do not use a body belt with this equipment. Body belts do not support your entire body, which may result in
serious injury.
;
The users of this equipment must be in good physical condition. The user must have the ability to absorb the landing.
;
Always wear gloves when handling the lifeline to control descent speed.
SINGLE-PERSON UNASSISTED ESCAPE: Procedures for performing an unassisted descent with the R550 Rescue
System are as follows:
Connect to a Full Body Harness or other Body Support (Figure 14): A full body harness or other means of
1.
supporting the user must be used with the R550 Rescue System. Do not use a body belt with this device. When
using a full body harness, connect the Snap Hook on the lifeline to the sternal D-ring (A) or dorsal D-ring (B). Ensure
the D-ring is positioned to hold the user upright. See the full body harness manufacturer's instructions for more
information.
Prepare the Lifeline for Descent: Prior to descent, the section of lifeline between the user and the
2.
R550 Rescue System must be tightened to remove any slack. Tighten the lifeline by pulling on the free end of the
rope until slack between the user and R550 Rescue System is removed. Once the lifeline is taut, hold the free end of
the lifeline tightly until descent is initiated.
3.
Descend to Safety: Release the free end of the lifeline to initiate descent. Descent speed will be
automatically controlled to a rate described in Table 1 ("R550 Rescue System - Descent Requirements") by the
R550 Rescue System's centrifugal brake. Descent may be slowed, interrupted or prevented by using the following
methods (See Figure 16):
1:
Slow or interrupt descent by firmly grasping the free end of the Lifeline (A).
2:
Use the Pigtail (B) while firmly grasping the free end of the Lifeline (A) to provide additional descent
control.
3:
Prevent unintentional descent by securing the free end of the Lifeline (A) with the Pigtail (B) and Cam Cleats
(C). Bend your knees to prepare for landing. After landing, disconnect the lifeline from the body support.
