HOW THE COMPONENTS WORK
left hand until its tighten against the tip of the fork.
(4) While pushing the wheel firmly to the upper slots of the fork tips, centre the wheel rim with the fork,
turn the quick release lever up and push it to the CLOSED position (see pages 24 to 25). The quick-re-
lease lever should be in a position parallel to the fork leg and curved toward the wheel.
If you can fully close the quick release lever without engaging your fingers in the fork of the paddle to
push, and the lever does not leave a clear imprint in the palm of your hand, tension is insufficient. Open
the lever, give it a quarter turn in a clockwise direction to the tension adjustment nut, then try again to
close the lever.
(5) If you can not push the lever to a parallel position to the fork blade, place it in the OPEN position. Then
take a quarter turn counter clockwise on the tension adjusting nut and try tightening the lever again.
Secondary restraints devices do not replace the proper adjustment of the quick release lever. If the
quick-release mechanism is not properly adjusted, the wheel may wobble or become loose, which could
cause you to lose control and fall, causing serious injury, including death.
c) How to remove a rear wheel with quick-release mechanism
(1) Move the rear derailleur to higher gear (the outer rear wheel, smaller).
(2) Open the brake pads.
(3) Pull the derailleur back with your right hand.
(4) Rotate the quick release lever to the OPEN position.
(5) Lift the rear wheel off the ground a few inches and, with the derailleur still pulled back, push the
wheel forward and down until it comes out of the rear dropouts.
d) How to install a rear wheel with quick-release mechanism
(1) Move the rear derailleur to its outside position.
(2) Pull the derailleur back with your right hand.
(3) Turn the quick release lever to the OPEN position. The lever should be on the side of the opposite
wheel to the derailleur and cassete.
(4) Place the chain on the smallest sprocket of cassete. Then, insert the wheel into the frame dropouts
and pull it up.
(5) Tight the adjusting nut until its tighten against the frame, then turn the lever to the front of the bike
to be in a position parallel to the chain base frame or to the riser and stay bended towards the wheel.
If you can fully close the quick release lever without engaging your fingers in the fork of the paddle to
push, and the lever does not leave a clear imprint in the palm of your hand, tension is insufficient. Open
the lever, give the adjustment nut a quarter turn in a clockwise direction to adjust the tension, then try
again to close the lever.
(6) If you can not push lever to a position parallel to the base of the chain or saddle tube, reinsert it
into the OPEN position. Then adjust the nut in a quarter turn counter clockwise and try tightening again.
(7) Push the rear derailleur back until it seats on its position.
(8) Close the brake pads, and then turn the wheel to make sure it is centred in the frame and that does
not obstruct the brake pads.
4. HOW TO REMOVE AND INSTALL WHEELS SECURED WITH SCREWS
a) Remove the front wheel secured with screws
(1) Open the brake pads.
(2) With a 15mm wrench or an adjustable six-inch wrench, loosen the two axle nuts.
(3) If the fork has a secondary retention device plug, unplug it and go to step 4. If the fork has an integral
secondary retention device, loosen the axle nuts with approximately six full turns, then go to step 4.
(4) Raise the front wheel a few inches above the ground, and give a small stroke at the top of the wheel
with the palm of your hand to take the wheel of the fork.
b) How to install a front wheel secured with screws
(1) With the steering fork facing forward, insert the wheel between the fork blades so that the axle seats
firmly at the top of the slots that are on the tips of the fork blades. The spindle nut washers must be on
