2. After assembling the tunneling tools, tunnel subcutaneously between the
lead incision site and the neurostimulator pocket.
#
Caution: Proceed slowly when the tunneling tool approaches the
neurostimulator pocket. If excess force is used, the patient could
experience additional trauma when resistance to tunneling suddenly
ceases.
Notes:
▪
Deep tunneling is not desirable.
▪
Avoid the lower thoracic ribs.
▪
If the tunneling tool does not extend between the lead incision site and
the neurostimulator pocket, make an intermediate incision.
3. Unscrew the tunneling tip; then, remove the tunneling tool, leaving the
passing straw in place in the tunnel.
4. Gently insert the proximal end of both lead bodies through the passing
straw.
5. After carefully removing the passing straw, verify that the location of the
lead has not changed.
Creating strain-relief loops when connecting the lead directly to a
neurostimulator
#
Caution: Use strain-relief loops as directed when implanting surgical
leads. Implanting surgical leads without strain-relief loops may reduce the
functional survival time of the lead, requiring reprogramming and/or early
replacement of the lead to restore effective therapy.
1. While maintaining lead position, create a strain-relief loop with each of the
lead bodies, by coiling the lead bodies near the lead paddle (Figure 6).
