SAFETY
1.1
General precautions
Before starting up the machine and before performing lubrication or maintenance, the operator must have read and
understood all the WARNINGS AND CAUTION MESSAGES in this manual and in the additional technical
documentation provided. The manufacturer cannot however foresee all possible events that can pose risks in the
various conditions of use and operation of the machine. Any maintenance operations and/or procedures not covered or
recommended in the user manuals must always be submitted to the manufacturer for approval. A user who wishes to adopt a
procedure not specifically recommended here is held responsible for making sure that it is safe and does not pose the risk of
physical injury. The following precautions must be followed to the letter to ensure safe operation.
The following instructions cannot safeguard you from all the dangers arising from use of the engine but must be
supplemented by the common sense and experience of the personnel in charge of operating the machine; these are
the only accident prevention measures that are truly indispensable.
- Knowledge of the machine: Read with care all the instructions in the user and maintenance booklets.
- Before starting up the machine, check that all the controls and safety devices are in order.
- Watch out for bystanders: If you expect any dangerous situations to arise, signal manoeuvres in
advance. Do not allow untrained personnel to approach the machine while it is running. Enforce the
obligation to use personal protective equipment (PPE). Observe the provisions of law governing safety in
the workplace and, given the presence of batteries with acid, use rubber gloves that are resistant to
sulphuric acid (PVC), protective goggles (mask or visor), acid-proof clothing, rubber safety boots,
helmet, avoid generating any sparks, do not bend over the batteries.
- Do not manually clean, oil, lubricate, repair or adjust any of the moving components.
- Exhaust gases are harmful. When working in an enclosed environment, make sure there is suitable
ventilation. Refer to specialized experienced personnel to make sure that there is adequate supply of fresh air.
- Diesel oil, oil and antifreeze fluids are harmful. In case of contact, wash skin with soap and water, if
ingested, consult a physician immediately.
- Oil fumes are toxic. Do not tamper with the oil fumes recirculation devices; in case of high oil
consumption, refer to an authorized repair shop.
- Wear earmuffs or earplugs to protect hearing. Whenever prolonged exposure to noise is expected.
- Watch out for moving parts. Do not access any mechanical parts while the engine is running. Use protections
for pulleys, belts and transmission shafts; do not approach any moving parts while holding cloths or wearing
loose clothing, which may get caught in the transmission members and cause serious personal injuries.
- Protect your hands with gloves. Certain parts (sheet metal, levers, ..) have sharp edges that can cut
you. Use suitable tools and equipment.
- Batteries. The starting batteries may generate harmful fumes; provide for suitable ventilation of the
environment, avoid any contact with the electrolyte fluid; contact of the electrolyte with certain metal
surfaces (e.g. aluminium) can generate toxic gases. The batteries contain sulphuric acid (corrosive)
and release an explosive gas, especially while recharging. It is therefore indispensable to ventilate the
room and not smoke or use naked flames near the batteries. Keep the batteries out of direct sunlight
and away from heat sources. To disconnect the battery start from the negative ground terminal.
- Watch out for hot surfaces. The muffler, manifold, base and heads of the diesel engine can cause burns.
- Do not open the water radiator cap if the engine is still hot, there is risk of serious burns!
- Do not smoke and do not keep the engine running while refuelling.
- If necessary, store fuels outdoors in a location not accessible to untrained personnel.
- Watch out for runaway speed. Runaway speed on a diesel engine is difficult to control by the
operator. Under certain conditions it can cause personal injury or damage to property. To avoid
runaway speed conditions we recommend the following:
- Make sure the pumps are properly primed before starting them.
- The pumps used in fire-fighting sets are not suitable for pumping liquids containing abrasive
ATTENTION
substances, solid or fibrous matter and flammable and explosive liquids.
- The diesel pump is suitable for operation in sheltered locations, protected from the weather and
freezing temperatures. Make sure that no obstructions or obstacles hinder the normal flow of the
cooling and combustion air.
- As a general rule, always disconnect the batteries and turn off the power supply at the electric panel
before installing and/or servicing any of the electrical and mechanical parts of the module or system.
- The electric panel may only be installed and connected by a qualified electrician in compliance with
the electrical regulations locally in force.
- Protect the environment. Do not burn mineral oils or fuels; these materials, together with filters,
gaskets and batteries must be delivered to the appropriate waste collection centers.
Maintenance: The operating and maintenance instructions describe the operations that can normally be performed by
moderately experienced personnel. In case of problems contact an authorized workshop or your retailer.
do not exceed the MAX level on the engine oil dipstick
do not exceed the MAX oil level in the air filter cup
set the engine in the horizontal position
do not modify the factory adjustments
do not tamper with the injection system
