Neutral electrode monitoring
Undivided neutral electrode (neutral electrode Type 1)
For undivided neutral electrodes, the monitoring capacity is limited to the
conductive connection between the neutral electrode and the device. If
the connection is broken or if the plug for the neutral electrode is not
plugged in, the error code "Er 10" will be displayed and the activation of
the monopolar HF output will be blocked.
To monitor the correct positioning of the neutral electrode, the use of a
divided neutral electrode is recommended.
Divided neutral electrodes
The use of divided neutral electrodes together with the Aesculap-PDM-
SYSTEM (Permanent-Dynamic-Monitoring) represents a comprehensive
safety concept for monitoring the neutral electrodes and their correct
application on the patient, as well as offering a high degree of patient pro-
tection against burns.
The PDM system allows for a continuous monitoring of the neutral elec-
trode conditions, evening during HF activation.
If a neutral electrode is positioned across an entire surface, the device
detects changes which occur e.g. due to the detachment of a partial area
of the neutral electrode. A small increase in contact resistance occurring
within a short period of time, is also securely detected as an error.
A distinction is made between the following errors:
Monitoring display 55
In addition, the "Er 10" display appears and the activation of the monop-
olar HF output is blocked. If a neutral electrode error occurs, checks should
be carried out on the entire surface application of the neutral electrode
on the patient, the supply line to the HF surgical device, and the plug con-
nectors.
Cause
Neutral electrode plug not plugged in or
connection broken
Short circuit in the neutral electrode
cable, the plug, or in the neutral electrode
Neutral electrode has not been applied
across the entire surface, increase of con-
tact resistance
Signal light is flashing
Divided disposable neutral electrode (neutral electrode Type 2)
The application of the divided disposable neutral electrode can be moni-
tored according to the aforementioned criteria.
When using these neutral electrodes, the safety instructions of the neutral
electrode manufacturer must be observed.
Reusable divided neutral electrode (neutral electrode Type 3)
In comparison to the divided disposable neutral electrode which is exclu-
sively intended for single application, the use of a reusable neutral elec-
trode (Type 3) is recommended both for economical and ecological rea-
sons.
The division of the neutral electrode, the special surface geometry, the
highly flexible material, and the insulated exterior offer significant advan-
tages from a technical safety perspective due to the wide range of moni-
toring possibilities.
The neutral electrode must be applied to the patient in such a way that
the black conductive surface is in contact with the skin. The blue, non-
conductive surface therefore needs to be directed away from the body.
Decommissioning the device
First switch the device off using the "Device on/off" switch 7. The "Device
ready for operation" LED 6 then goes out. However, the device will remain
ready to switch on, (which is signaled by LED 5). By pulling the mains
cable out, the device will be completely separated from the supply net-
work.

Protection against faulty operation
Switch-on test
Microprocessor self-test
As faultless function of the microprocessor is a requirement for flawless
work with the device and all control and monitoring functions, a so-called
self-test is carried out each time the device is switched on. This test com-
prises a CPU, RAM, EEPROM and watchdog test.
Neutral electrode monitoring test
During the switch-on process, the neutral electrode monitoring is
checked. It is therefore necessary to separate the neutral electrode from
the device.
If an error is detected, the error code "Er 01" appears in the display of the
monopolar part. Monopolar surgery will only be possible after the error
has been removed. However, bipolar surgery will be possible.
