Instructions
To Assemble the Handpiece (continued)
NOTES:
• Using a regulated facility vacuum source and a fluid collection canister with
the InterPulse Irrigation System is optional and depends on the InterPulse
handpiece configuration and tubing assembly.
• If using suction, make sure a fluid collection canister is connected properly
to a regulated facility vacuum source per local hospital protocol. Adjust the
regulated facility vacuum source per local recommendations/regulations
governing procedure-specific suction levels.
• To facilitate assembly, pull away and separate the irrigation tubing from the
co-bonded suction tubing enough to allow easy access to the corresponding
connection points.
• See the instructions for use supplied with the Wound Care Tubing Replacement
Sets if suction tubing must be installed in the handpiece.
3. Connect the handpiece suction tubing to the fluid collection canister, if
required.
NOTE: The suction tube adapter may be removed to connect the handpiece
suction tubing to a smaller diameter suction port on a vacuum fluid collection
canister.
4. Without touching the tip lock mechanism, install the appropriate tip assembly
into the handpiece until an audible 'click' is heard. See the Accessories
section for tip assembly information.

To Operate Handpiece
WARNINGS:
• ALWAYS follow the current local recommendations and/or regulations
governing infection control protocols for pulsatile lavage treatments. Failure to
comply may result in the transmission of dangerous bacteria into the air and
onto surfaces from wounds.
• ALWAYS place tubing sets away from personnel traffic areas to eliminate
inadvertent tubing set kinking and/or handpiece movement.
• ALWAYS use aseptic technique when placing the handpiece in a safe and
secure location when not in use.
• DO NOT place the handpiece on a patient.
• For wound care applications performed outside the sterile field where the
handpiece is used on a single patient repeatedly, ALWAYS disinfect the
handpiece, and replace the tip assembly and suction tubing before each use.
See the Cleaning section and the instructions for use supplied with the Wound
Care Tubing Replacement Sets.
• If using suction, ALWAYS follow current local recommendations/regulations
governing procedure-specific suction levels to remove fluid waste safely from
a surgical site.
1. Squeeze the trigger enough to allow fluid to reach the end of the handpiece
tip assembly before operating.
2. To start irrigation, squeeze the trigger.
NOTE: If desired, push the full speed lock mechanism to hold the trigger in the
full speed irrigation setting. To disengage the mechanism, squeeze the trigger.
3. If using suction, slide the suction clamp to open and close the suction tubing
pathway to control suction flow. If the handpiece fails to provide suction, see
the Troubleshooting section.
4. To stop irrigation and end the operation of the handpiece, release the trigger.
To Disassemble the Handpiece
WARNINGS:
• DO NOT reuse single use, disposable accessories. All disposable accessories
are single use only.
• Handling biohazard waste is potentially dangerous. ALWAYS follow current local
regulations governing biohazard waste to safely handle and dispose of surgical
fluid waste.
• A tip assembly and suction tubing will contain surgical waste after use.
ALWAYS handle these disposable accessories as potentially infectious
materials after use. ALWAYS wear gloves and protective eye wear when
removing and disposing of these accessories.
NOTE: Make sure all the surgical fluid waste has been removed from the tip
assembly and suction tubing before disconnecting the suction tubing from the
fluid collection canister.
1. Press the tip locking mechanism and remove the tip assembly from the
handpiece (figure 2).
Figure 2 – To Remove the Tip Assembly
2. Dispose of the contaminated suction tubing and tip assembly properly.
NOTE: Before removing the irrigation tube spike from the irrigation bag, take
measures to prevent the irrigation bag from leaking.
3. Remove the irrigation tube spike from the irrigation bag for final handpiece
disposal.
4. If using a handpiece with a rechargeable power pack, remove the handpiece
power cord plug from the power pack. Clean the power pack as required. See
the instructions for use supplied with the InterPulse Power Pack Charger.
5. Dispose of the handpiece properly. See the Disposal/Recycle section. If using
a handpiece with a removable battery pack, see the To Remove the Battery
Pack section.
