INSTRUMENT
Store cartridges in box until time of use.
6 INSTRUMENT
Medtronic Activated Clotting Time Cartridges are specifically designed for use in Medtronic Automated Coagulation Timers.
For instrument instructions consult the operator's manual.
If blood should get into the light paths, it is critical the instrument be cleaned as soon as possible. In order to ensure proper
instrument performance, it is important to clean the instrument a minimum of every thirty (30) days or more. An Actuator
Cleaning Kit (catalog # 303-58) is provided with each instrument. See details in Cleaning Kit package insert.

8 SPECIMEN COLLECTION AND PREPARATION

Improperly handled samples can yield erroneous coagulation test results; therefore, samples must be collected carefully and
handling techniques must be consistent.
If blood is obtained by venipuncture, the venipuncture should be clean and the first several milliliters of blood discarded to
avoid contamination of the sample with tissue thromboplastin. Blood should not be taken from heparinized indwelling
catheters or other anticoagulated lines without thoroughly flushing the line.
If testing fresh whole blood, samples should be run as quickly as possible after being drawn. Baseline samples, which
contain no anticoagulant, should be run within one (1) minute. Heparinized samples should be run within two (2) minutes.
If testing citrated whole blood, test the sample immediately or store the sample at room temperature and test samples from
any one patient in the same time frame. For example, if a patient sample is tested 15 minutes after drawing then subsequent
samples for that patient should be tested at 15 minutes.
Citrated samples should be tested within 6 hours when stored at room temperature. Ensure that the sample has the proper
amount of citrate (a 1:9 volume ratio of 3.2% or 3.8% sodium citrate to blood).
